NAIROBI, KENYA — Exiled Chadian rebel leader Timan Erdimi has returned to the country after a decade in exile in Qatar for talks aiming to pave the way for democratic elections. But boycotts by rebel and opposition groups remain major hurdles. Erdimi, now 67, returned Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s anticipated landmark talk in N'Djamena, Chad's capital. Erdimi, who heads the Union of Resistance Forces — widely known as UFR — is accused of leading an armed group that attempted to twice overthrow the Chadian government, in 2008 and 2019. Comprising at least 40 rebel groups, Erdimi's UFR signed a peace agreement on August 8 in Doha for talks that would pave the way for elections after 18 months of military rule in Chad. But two of the biggest rebel groups are boycotting the negotiations forum. Agence France-Presse has reported that the two groups — Front for Change and Concord in Chad — triggered the 2021 offensive in northeastern Chad that killed longtime leader Idriss Deby Itno. The groups claim the forum is politically biased. The upcoming talks also are expected to bring together 1,400 delegates from the military government, civil society opposition parties, and trade unions. According to General Mahamat Idriss Deby, president of Chad’s transitional military council, the talks provide a chance for reconciliation in the fractured country. The junta’s 18-month window for transition to democracy expires in October — a deadline that France, the African Union and other stakeholders have urged the president to uphold

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is pleased to launch the latest edition of the Patrimonito Storyboard Competition 2022. This competition aims to provide young people with an opportunity to use their creative and problem-solving skills to raise awareness about World Heritage sites.
The World Heritage Education Programme is welcoming secondary school pupils and youth to create storyboards on the theme for this year’s competition. The best submission will be selected by an independent jury and professionally produced into animated films for global distribution to schools and at World Heritage education events. Storyboard Competition Theme:World Heritage and Climate Change About United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. UNESCO’s programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agenda 2030, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. Political and economic arrangements of governments are not enough to secure the lasting and sincere support of the peoples. Peace must be founded upon dialogue and mutual understanding. Aim and Benefits of UNESCO Patrimonito Storyboard Competition The winner will receive a UNESCO certificate, and the winning storyboards will be professionally adapted into an animated film episode of the Patrimonito’s World Heritage Adventures series. The name of the creator of the winning storyboard will be credited in the film which will be distributed worldwide by UNESCO and its partners. The release of the next episode is scheduled for 2023. The artworks must be created solely by the participant(s), either by hand or using digital drawing tools. Big Brother Naija fake housemate, Deji, has thrown fellow level 1 housemate, Chichi, into confusion as he packed his belongings with intention to move out of the house.
Deji and Chichi have shown some level of intimacy in the house over the last two weeks. “What is happening? Yesterday you complained about me. You were angry at me. Now you are packing your bag. Are you leaving Big Brother house?,” Chichi asked. Deji responded that he’s packing his things and ready to leave the Level 1 house. Big Brother had on Wednesday tasked Deji to create a stir in the house. During his diary session, Biggie told Deji to pretend that he’s no longer happy with Level 1 housemates and would prefer moving to Level 2. Biggie said he’s free to devise any means to execute the task, but should ensure that he carried out the task to the point of packing his bags in readiness to leave the house on Friday. Deji is one of the two fake housemates in the Big Brother Level Up house. There are possibilities for him to become a real housemate if he’s able to pull off the task. The other fake housemate, Modella, failed to deliver on the first task given to her by Biggie, while Deji was ‘technically’ successful on his first task. The status of the fake housemates are hidden from other housemates.

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Friday that the Nigerian Civil Service is not a dumping ground for job seekers, as the unemployment rate continues to rise.
At the state house in Abuja, the president issued the warning while receiving the Federation’s Head of Civil Service, Folashade Yemi-Esan, and the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Innocent Bola-Audu. During an interview with Punch Newspaper on Sunday, the union’s president also revealed that a large number of lecturers had left the country to seek greener pastures abroad and that many more would leave even if the current strike was called off. “So many lecturers are leaving to engage in farming and others; lecturers are tired of the treatment they’re receiving from the government and because of this, they are looking for alternatives. So many more will leave even after the strike too,” Osodeke during the interview said.
