"The NEC has to depend on the result of the congresses. The zones have held their own congresses; the branch chairmen will also talk to their members and they will get feedback which will be transmitted to the NEC," one the sources said.
Questions on whether the strike will be called off will however be answered pending on the outcome of the meeting on Sunday, August 28th. The date ofbthe meeting is confirmed by the chairperson, ASUU, Federal University of Technology Minna, Dr Gbolahan Bolarin.

ASUU May Call off Strike On Sunday by ChaleneLucy(f) : 2:20 am On Aug 24, 2022

A decision whether to call off the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities will be taken on Sunday.

According to Punch, ASUU National Executive Council will meet on Sunday, August 28, 2022 to take a decision on whether to suspend or continue with the industrial action.

Sources among the union’s NEC members told Punch on Monday that the meeting will hold at the union’s national headquarters at the University of Abuja.

It was gathered that the council will take a decision on the industrial action based on reports from the various state congresses.

The PUNCH reports that ASUU had on Monday, February 14, 2022 embarked on a strike.

The union had demanded for the renegotiation of the ASUU-FGN 2009 agreement; release of revitalisation funds for universities; deployment of the University Transparency Accountability System for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers; release of earned allowances; and the release of the white paper report of the visitation panels to universities.

“The NEC meeting will hold on August 28, the four weeks ultimatum that we gave is expiring that same day. We will be making our decisions based on the results of the state congresses.

“The NEC has to depend on the result of the congresses. The zones have held their own congresses; the branch chairmen will also talk to their members and they will get feedback which will be transmitted to the NEC,” one of the sources said.

When asked if the union will consider calling off the strike, the source asked, “Does it look like the government wants to end the strike?”

Confirming the date of the NEC meeting to our correspondent, the chairperson, ASUU, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Dr Gbolahan Bolarin, simply said, “Yes, Sunday.”

Shortly after the commencement of ASUU strike, other university-based unions such as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and other allied educational institutions had also embarked on strike to push their demands.

In a bid to end the strike, the government had set up a negotiation team led by the Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja, Nimi Briggs, to look into negotiations with the unions.

While, SSANU, NASU and NAAT had suspended their strike actions, the negotiations between the government and ASUU had stalled.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education on, Monday, said it was not aware of plans to proscribe ASUU.

The ministry also noted that the failure of the union to call off its strike despite the interventions of the government was unreasonable.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Ben Goong, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

Media reports had said the government was planning to proscribe the union and drag it to the National Industrial Court over the strike.

Goong said, “We are not aware of such plans. The minister gave all the updates during his press briefing with State House correspondents. If there were plans to take further steps, he would have noted it.

“As regards the next steps, the government has already inaugurated a committee to harmonise the IPPIS, UTAS and UP3; this will ensure that the government will pay with only one payment platform that will harmonise all the technical peculiarities.

“The government has also rolled out its achievements. A total of N2.5 trillion has been expended in the tertiary education sector in the past 10 years, that is even much more than the amount in the 2009 agreement. The issues about salary adjustment have also been attended to.

“If you bring some demands and almost 80% has been attended to, there is no need to drag the strike anymore. It is unreasonable for the strike to be lingering, seeing as the government has worked towards fulfilling most of the demands.

I’m not responsible for your crisis – Ortom fires back at APC. by ChaleneLucy(f) : 2:57 am On Aug 24, 2022

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has debunked a report alleging that he is pushing for the removal of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

A group ‘Tiv Youth Council’ had in a statement on Monday alleged that the governor, alongside other PDP leaders, is plotting to unseat the Ayu following the crisis rocking the main opposition party.

Reacting to the report, Ortom in a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Media, and Publicity, Terver Akase alleged that the state’s chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was responsible for the allegation.

According to the statement, Tiv Youth Council’ which issued the release, does not exist, alleging that they were hired by the APC to play the role of attack dog.

Akase said Governor Samuel Ortom has no problem with the PDP National Chairman, Senator Ayu, stressing that the party is already working to resolve the issues of concern within its fold and won’t be needing the input of APC.

The statement reads, “The APC youth group in question insults people for a living. Theirs is a perfidious political enterprise that thrives on blackmail, mischief, and the stirring of acrimony for survival.

“APC which is engulfed in a series of crises in Benue State ranging from its fraudulent nomination of a governorship candidate to the impasse of a running mate lacks the moral high ground to comment on the affairs of PDP.

“Their attempt to portray Governor Ortom as one who fights other illustrious Benue sons is such a lame-duck and nauseating reasoning. The Governor as an effective team player has supported and is still supporting many Benue people to grow and occupy high positions in society.

“He believes in human capital development and redefining Benue State’s place in the national politics of our country.

“We expect APC to face their mountain of internal wranglings which have led to their failure to field a governorship candidate for the 2023 elections in Benue State.

“APC ought to be worried more about the fact that their party is in disarray in Benue State as can be seen in the mass defection of their members into PDP, including serving members of the State House of Assembly.

“Governor Ortom is not responsible for the collapse of APC in Benue State. He was not the one who advised the leader of APC in the state, Senator George Akume to take the party as his personal property.

“The Governor also did not advise Senator Akume to refuse to conduct primary elections thereby throwing the party into unending crisis. Governor Ortom also did not advise Senator Akume to impose a governorship candidate and running mate on the APC.

“Under the leadership of Governor Ortom, PDP conducted transparent and credible primaries. With 35 Governorship and many other aspirants for National and State Assemblies seats, the Governor effectively coordinated the party and it has remained strong and united, without any form of litigation.

“As we earlier stated, the opposition party in the state is out to divert attention from the myriad of problems facing it with numerous court cases trailing their controversial nomination process.

“Launching media attacks on Governor Ortom has become an obsession of sorts for the APC.

“We urge members of the public to regard the utterances of the group as empty rantings only aimed at securing their next meal ticket”.

Strike continues, FG yet to take concrete action – ASUU by ChaleneLucy(f) : 8:48 pm On Aug 24, 2022

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, has told Nigerians that the ongoing strike will continue because the Federal Government is yet to call the union for discussion.

The ASUU’s branch chairman, Dr Kassim Umaru, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen at the end of its Congress, held at the University’s Mini Campus in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.

Umaru also challenged the Federal Government to reference any of the things done to bring to an end the ongoing strike.

According to him, Congress deliberated on issues around the strike and vehemently pronounced and rejected the offer presented by the Federal Government, adding that the National Executive Council (NEC) would meet at the end of the four weeks ultimatum to take its decision.

Umaru said, “As far as we’re concerned, the federal government hasn’t done anything to our various demands.

“The federal government should tell the Nigerian public what they’ve done. The two committees that were set up, the Nimi Briggs committee, the Jubrin committee, were set up and these committees had their recommendations.”

He added, “Our salaries are always negotiated. It’s not something you feel you can pay us. It’s something that you have to sit down to talk and agree that you can pay us.

“As far as we are concerned, our job is different from any other civil servants; it’s the job you are going back to do. You’re not paying for an hour. You’re paying for the job we have done, so it’s their responsibility to pay us and if they said they’re not paying us, it is a joke taken too far.

“As it’s, they have not called our union and Nigerians should know that we’ve not been called, no invitation to our union and all that we know is that the strike continues.”

Recall that ASUU, on February 14, shut down public universities over the inability of the Federal Government to implement previous agreements both parties entered into.

The lecturers’ agitations include funding for the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution, promotion arrears and others
