Cpascarino hails Chelsea’s £60m target amid criticism by ChaleneLucy(f) : 12:27 am On Aug 30, 2022

Chelsea legend Tony Cascarino has slammed those who are of the opinion that Everton star Anthony Gordon is not worth £60million.

Chelsea are interested and have made the move to sign the 21-year-old this summer.

Some pundits have criticised the player’s valuation, which according to reports, Chelsea are willing to meet. Cascarino believes the mooted price is a fair one.

“I think it’s a bit unfair of everyone saying he’s not worth this and he’s not worth that. I think Chelsea have seen a very special talent and have decided to go after him,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

He pointed out that Everton would be pained to allow Gordon to leave because they recognise he is a really good player and they want to keep him.

“People will say it’s £60m for a potential player but potential is reaching the highest value now,” he said.

“His pace is quite clear, he can run direct, he’s got a great turn of foot and he’ll go past people.

“He’s fearless, tenacious and he’s got a lot of great things in his game,” Cascarino added.

The eviction of Big Brother Naija, BBNaija season 7 housemate, Amaka has been condemned by fans on social media.

Amaka was evicted on Monday night after receiving the highest nomination from housemates during the surprise eviction.

Amaka and Doyin each got six nominations, but only Doyin survived the eviction because Deji, Rachel and Chizzy’s nominations were not counted.

@Bamidele “This immediate eviction is really unfair and unjust to Amaka, her fans didn’t have a chance to vote.”

No protest, strike in FCET Umunze – Lecturers insist by ChaleneLucy(f) : 8:29 pm On Aug 30, 2022

The Academic staff of the Federal College of Education, Umunze, Anambra State, has frowned at the 3-week warning strike declared by the Chairman of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

The union also frowned at a report that lecturers protested in the school premises on Monday, describing it as false.

Speaking with newsmen on Monday, some of the lecturers said the report of the protest in the college was a clear attempt by some mischievous elements to discredit the institution.

Dr Nwike Matthew, a Chief Lecturer and member of the College Academic Board, noted that the school authorities had made efforts to clear a backlog of allowances, including 14 months salary arrears inherited from the previous administration.

He said, “I do not believe that compelling the college management to borrow money to make a non-statutory payment is the right approach.

“Since the College Management pleaded for understanding and patience from the union, my colleagues should have taken the Management by her words,” he said..

On his part, Kenechukwu Agajelu of the Political Science Department, noted that COEASU has no mandate to run to the media to ask parents to withdraw their children from the College.

He further kicked against moving into classrooms and examination halls to forcefully drive lecturers and students away. He described such illegal acts as a contravention of labour law.

“You called for strike but did not call for picketing. Why are you picketing? Why are you preventing others from going to work through social media posts, phone calls, and physical abuse?

Also speaking, the Head of Department, Education Foundation, Dr Jideofo Ezewuzie, also pointed out that the College defaulted in TETFund Teaching Practice Allowance during the previous administration due to the action of COEASU.

Sule Lamido University suspends strike by ChaleneLucy(f) : 8:35 pm On Aug 30, 2022

Governing Council of the Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa, has directed all academic staff of the University to withdraw from the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike and return to work immediately.

According to the University, the council directed all Heads of Departments to take note of staff who return to work from Monday 29th August 2022 to 5th September 2022.

The Governor urged the union to appreciate the state government’s commitment and call off the strike.

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14, 2022, over the enrollment of lecturers on the federal government’s IPPIS payroll system as well as other demands the government failed to meet.

Rising bandits’ attack capable of aborting 2023 elections – IPAC by ChaleneLucy(f) : 8:41 pm On Aug 30, 2022

Chairman, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has said the rising insecurity in northern Nigeria may be an obstacle to the 2023 general elections.

In a statement on Tuesday, by the spokesperson of the group, Ayuba Ahmad, he said the chairman stated this during a visit to the Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS),Yusuf Magaji Bichi.

He called for an urgent and comprehensive solution to the insecurity across the country, in order to stave-off the palpable danger posed to the nation’s progress.

He expressed fears that terrorists have taken over and established quasi-governments in some parts of the States in the region.

According to him, apart from calamities of death, disruption of the nation’s economy and the devastating social dislocations presently on the rampage across the country, the monstrous phenomenon of insecurity had the capacity of reversing the gains Nigeria had made in the entrenchment and consolidation of democracy by aborting the coming elections in 2023

He pleaded with the political parties, their candidates and supporters to embark on peaceful and issue-based campaigns, instead of stoking the embers of insecurity, anarchy and violence by whipping up divisive sentiments of religion, ethnicity, regional and other fault lines.

According to him, “while members of the public may not be aware of the impressive mileage covered so far, the security agencies have been working assiduously in collaborative efforts, with the results that the various armed groups, insurgents and other violent criminals have been severely decapitated to near position of total annihilation.”

2023 Budget: How borrowing has become main source of funding Buhari’s budgets by ChaleneLucy(f) : 8:51 pm On Aug 30, 2022

The federal government is proposing a N19.49 trillion budget for the year 2023. More than half of the money is to be borrowed.

To finance the budget, the federal government plans to borrow N11.03 trillion and privatize several assets to raise the capital.

The government plans to generate only N8.5 trillion, out of the N19.47 trillion budget.

Buhari’s administration plans to finance the huge budget by borrowing N7.4 trillion from the domestic market and N1.8 trillion from foreign entities. In addition, FG is expecting N206.1 billion from privatization proceeds and N1.7 trillion multilateral project-tied loans.

This borrowing plan is far above the recommended threshold stipulated by the fiscal responsibility Act. The law provides that the deficit should not exceed 3% of GDP. However, this plan is 5.01% of the GDP.

Section 12 (1) of the FRA states: “Aggregate expenditure and the aggregate amount appropriated by the National Assembly for each financial year shall not be more than the estimated aggregate revenue plus a deficit, not exceeding three per cent of the estimated Gross Domestic Product or any sustainable percentage as may be determined by the National Assembly for each financial year.”

However, the law gives the President power to cross the threshold based on the approval of the National Assembly if the president believes that there is a reason to cross.

But the president has steadily crossed the deficit with different justifications. In 2021, it was 3.5% with the argument that there is a need to finance COVID-19 recovery. In the past, the administration premised its argument on funding the defence sector due to insecurity.

This time, the government is making petroleum subsidy the central argument for the huge deficit. However, it’s worth noting that, in this current proposal, subsidy will only be paid for 6 months.

While the government is using subsidy as an excuse, there is a part of being unable to generate revenue. In 2014, government daily oil production was 2.33 barrels per day, but the government is projecting to produce 1.69 BPD in 2023.

On Monday, when the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed appeared before the House or Reps Committee on Finance, she lamented that oil theft has reduced the capacity of the government to fund the budget.

She said the inability to produce sufficient oil has made it impossible to meet the crude oil for PMS swap deal as the government is now paying cash instead of crude oil.

“We need the crude to undertake the DSDP arrangement where crude is swapped for PMS. It means we have to pay for PMS ourselves,” she said.

Furthermore, Nigeria is unable to meet its OPEC quota of 1.86 million barrels per day.

It would be recalled that the federal government recently signed a N4 billion monthly pipeline surveillance agreement with Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo.

It is a reversal of the initial stance which saw the cancellation of the contract months after President Buhari assumed office.

According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), as at the first quarter of the year, the debt of the country stood at N41.6 trillion.

Before the year runs out, Nigeria is expected to have added to it and by 2023, FG alone is expected to add N11.03 trillion to the profile.

Dr Adesanya Moses, an Economist at the Nigerian Army University, Biu, said any borrowing that is not going into financing the capital component of the budget is not sustainable.

“If they keep borrowing not for capital projects, then it is not sustainable because part of it will go into recurrent expenditures and debt servicing. It will be more efficient if the investment can repay the loans— it is what we call derived demand. When you spend money on capital projects, it will help the economy to grow.

“The problem is that borrowing to finance subsidy is not sustainable because the vast majority of the subsidy goes to the high and middle income earners. It is not creating jobs or improving the life of the people. Borrowing to finance subsidy is not sustainable,” he said.

While this is going to be President Buhari’s last budget, a large part of it will be implemented by another administration, hence, whoever emerges as the president in 2023, will inherit a huge budget built on borrowing.

Increasing debts not solution to Nigeria’s indebtedness – Atiku to FG by ChaleneLucy(f) : 12:27 pm On Aug 31, 2022

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned the Federal Government that increasing debts will never be a solution to the country’s indebtedness.

Atiku, a former vice president, who in a statement, Tuesday, recalled that last week the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the GDP figures for Q2 2022, said the government has been unreasonably upbeat about the reported growth rate of 3.4%.

Waziri Adamawa claimed that the economy is in deeper trouble than the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government is willing to admit.

The former president lamented that citizens’ level of misery hasn’t changed under President Muhammadu Buhari’s led APC.

Atiku attributed the misery to the slow pace of growth and decline of the agriculture, oil and gas and manufacturing sectors.

“Second, unabated are rising commodity prices occasioned by high energy and transportation costs (and aggravated by the disorderliness in the forex market), ” he added.

The statement partly read, “Also, debt levels continue to rise while the fiscal capacity to service its debts is declining. All these are enough to erase the perceived gains from output growth.

“Having run out of ideas, it appears that our unprecedented level of indebtedness is whetting the government’s appetite for more debt. This is a recipe for macroeconomic instability.

“We challenge the National Bureau of Statistics to share with the public their recent statistics on poverty, unemployment and commodity prices — the reality of which will leave no hope for the common man.

“Like I have said before, increasing debts will never be a solution to our indebtedness. My government, if elected, will halt the rate of debt accumulation and instead focus on private-public partnerships in financing development.”

He noted that the consideration of a government of national unity will douse the temperature, unite Nigerians and pave the way for improved security.

According to him, improved security allows for investments and, therefore, an improved economy.

Don’t blame politicians, Office of Accountant General, others are the problem by ChaleneLucy(f) : 1:11 pm On Aug 31, 2022

A member of the House of Representatives, Taiwo Oluga, has asked Nigerian youths to focus on the Office of the Accountant General and other agencies for the state of the country.

Oluga said most times Nigerians “shout politicians” but attention should be on MDAs.

The lawmakers stated these on Tuesday as the OAGF once again presented an inaccurate account during a public hearing on Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) organized by the Committee on Finance.

It would be recalled that the OAGF was queried on Monday for presenting an inaccurate report.

Today, when the Nigerian Energy Commission appeared before the committee, the agency claimed to have remitted N13 million, however, representatives of OAGF stated that the commission remitted N27 million.

Also, same thing was recorded when the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency appeared before the committee and claimed to have remitted N1.9 billion, again OAGF said the agency remitted N2 million.

The discrepancies prompted a rebuke from some lawmakers, who berated the agencies for doing a poor job at record keeping.

Reacting to the discrepancies, Oluga said Nigerian youths should know that the agencies are the problem and should next EndSARS happen, MDAs should be the focus not politicians.

“All the agencies, especially the office of the Accountant general, are our problem in this country.

“Because Nigerians will be shouting ‘politicians’ Look at what my colleague has just read out. it is good we let Nigerians know. Various agencies, especially the office of the accountant general, are our problem.
“The youth must know, so that next time there is endsars, the youths must face them,” she said.

NUC to meet education minister, VCs over ASUU strike by ChaleneLucy(f) : 1:32 pm On Aug 31, 2022

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has fixed a meeting to deliberate the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The parley has been scheduled for September 6 at the NUC headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Expected are Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of federal universities.

NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, announced the meeting in a notice on Tuesday.

The chancellors will engage Adamu on the contentious issues and how to end the industrial action.

Rasheed reminded the officials that the ASUU strike led to the closure of the institutions since February 14.

He said non-teaching unions suspended theirs on 24th August, 2022, while a final decision is being awaited from ASUU.

“It has become necessary for the governing councils and the management of the universities to be briefed on the decisions and actions taken by the Federal Government so far.

“This is to allow for a well-coordinated review of the situation, including building consensus around succeeding actions”, Rasheed added.

Playing politics with religion has devastating effect – Bishop Kukah by ChaleneLucy(f) : 7:44 pm On Aug 31, 2022

Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto State has warned politicians that using religion to manipulate politics will have a devastating effect on the development in the country.

Bishop Kukah noted that just as it happened in Germany during the reign of Adolf Hitler, such moves by politicians in the country would come with a grave consequence.

He made the observation on Tuesday in Abuja during the presentation of his new book, “Broken Truth,” as part of activities lined up for his 70th birthday.

He observed that looking at history, there is a consequence for using religion to manipulate politics, saying that there is the need to look at Germany as the consequences are there to see in Hitler.

Bishop Kukah opined that the problem is that the Nigerian political elites lacked the mental capacity to understand the consequences of the fire they were stoking.

He observed that there was nothing to suggest that the average person who is living in the north, whether Fulani or Hausa, could say that they were proud of the Nigerian political system, beyond a very tiny percentage.

He added, “So, if you decide that you want to give privilege to a religion or an ethnic group, what will happen is that others automatically become outsiders.”

According to him, agitations are ongoing in the country, saying that the citizens were more intelligent than those steering the affairs of the country.

He stressed that it would not have been a bad thing if people who don’t know seek knowledge.
