How I broke world record by playing the saxophone for 46 minutes – Femi Kuti by Fgreen(m) : 11:56 pm On May 09, 2017

He set the new mark on Sunday.

https://www.facebook.com/thenetng/videos/10155115321465490/

Afrobeat legend, Femi Kuti amazed the world on Sunday, May 7, when he played the saxophone for 46 minutes and 38 seconds.

His stunning effort saw him break Kenny G‘s previous record of 45 minutes and 37 seconds for longest single note on the saxophone.

Femi Kuti held forth on his saxophone and took the audience at the New Afrika Shrine on a musical ecstasy while setting the new mark.

TheNETng reached out to Kuti to hear how he was able to beat such record and he had this to say:

‘It’s called breath circulation. You have to keep on circling your breath,’ he said.

‘It means you have to store your breath and use it, and count the minutes slowly and continuously till you are done.’

When asked how many hours of rehearsal it took him to achieve such feat, the son of the Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti said, ‘It took me three Sundays, I tried it consecutively for three weeks.’

Femi Kuti set the new record on Sunday, May 6
Kuti continued, ‘Holding your breath is very boring. It’s not an easy thing to do, all your organs and muscles will want to give up. At a point you get lost in the performance and you don’t even know where you are again.

‘It’s about slowing the tension in your body as well, your mind must also be focused, or else one will be thrown off balance.’

But that’s not the end of the Afrobeat legend’s plan to thrill his guests at the Afrika Shrine, as he promised them more.

‘I’m going to try to go for 50 minutes, I’ll try next Sunday again, and if I don’t succeed, I’ll try again.

‘It took me three Sundays to get here, and since the fire is burning, I’ll keep trying, but I regret that I did not try this in my thirties.’

When we probed him on why he did not try it in his 30s, he said, ‘Back then, people were always trying to put me down. They were always saying, Kenny G has already done it.

‘But now, no one can hold me back, I’m going for 50 minutes and then I’ll go for one hour,’ Kuti boasted.

The Problem With Mercy Johnson’s Call For Prayers For Her Marriage by Fgreen(m) : 12:11 am On May 10, 2017

Celebrity marriage palaver have been in our faces for some time now. Unfortunately, we have had more cases of crises to handle than role models to celebrate.

The Kogi-born actress had while celebrating her awesome friendship with her hubby in a prelude to his birthday asked her fans to pray for her marriage so that she can have her man for like ‘forever’. Certainly what every other celebrity out there would wish for! But beyond the pre-birthday wish and all the love talk, Mercy’s craving for fan prayers for her marriage may still be a bit out of line, especially considering the turmoil some of her peers have gone through recently in terms of domestic violence, irrespective of the fact that the husbands (or wife in the case of Freeze) have been in denial of perpetuating such violence. While there may be no big deal in asking fans to pray with one on any matter, Mercy’s plea sounds more like a mockery of the situation of what others are going through, especially because we know that the success of her marriage so far is not because of her fans’ prayers, neither are the problems the others have faced being because of a lack of prayers from their fans.

Bottom line, Mercy and hubby should rather keep sharing the secrets of their longevity with their peers as a way of helping them rather than giving fans cause to worry over marital storms which they are not facing. Blissful marriages, whether celebrity or not, are not a product of social media prayers.

Contrary opinion very welcome.

Why Comedians Have the Prettiest Wives - Elenu by Fgreen(m) : 12:19 am On May 10, 2017

It is no longer news that comedians have the prettiest of wives in the entertainment industry in Nigeria... popular comedian, Elenu shares his thoughts on that.

Elenu and wife

Even a blind person would attest to the fact that most Nigerian comedians have some of the prettiest women in their homes and sharing their beds.

Often fair-skinned and gorgeous, the wives of many Nigerian comedians cannot be waved aside as far as beauty is concerned. This has led to a debate among the general populace, as some posit that all women love men with rich sense of humour, while others conclude that for these women, it is all about the money.

Akpororo and wife
On a quest to find out the true picture, Sunday Scoop spoke with comedian, Akinlami Babatunde Julius aka Elenu. He said, “I may not be able to categorically answer your question as I cannot speak for anybody else but myself.

"However, I believe that despite the constant jokes and carefree nature of most comedians, we are actually very romantic. Comedians know how to treat women well and they don’t hesitate to do that. Naturally, I like to make the people around me happy as I believe we only live once.”

AY and wife

Elenu, who is married to Chinwe, also shared his awkward experience while proposing to his wife. “When I first proposed to my wife, she actually laughed as she thought I was joking. But since I was already used to that, I had to convince her that I was for real,” he said.

The Matharoo Sisters Are Back! Launch Disturbing New Attack On Billionaire, Femi by Fgreen(m) : 1:20 am On May 10, 2017

Their salacious gist broke the internet across Africa and beyond when it hit the airwaves a few months back. So much was spilled on their supposed escapades and s*x life, with many reading gleefully and mouth agaped.

Now after several months of laying low and chilling, the 2 socialites seems to have gotten their groove back again and have thought to come out with gun blazing and smoking and they are shooting from the hips as they reveal all. As we speak they are in Canada, where they have since been since January 2nd and where believe they are safe and can at least be given the benefit of the doubt, to say their version of what went down. So they have thought to spill the beans keeping nothing whatsoever, to the very minutest details.

They since a week ago, have tried to deny many of the allegations against them even going as far as having news interviews which only a small part of was aired. They claim to have agreed that they were involved because of the threat to their lives, they apparently believed in the saying of the sages, that the ram that took a reverse, didn't run away actually, but went back to go gain momentum, so they just had to agree to just get out and go.

They claim to have just been cannon fodders. According to Jyoti who we actually spoke with and chatted with at length, many of their friends or acquaintances were actually arrested and questioned and let off quietly likes of Swanky Jerry and others, even before they were arrested and threatened. But no noise was made about these, but when it came to them they were the perfect fall guys and then all h3ll was raised, with so much hoopla. Now the girls have thought to reveal all that went down in their own words not keeping nothing.

How Nollywood Actor, Mcdonald Oti Escaped From The kidnappers by Fgreen(m) : 1:27 am On May 10, 2017

Nollywood actor, Mcdonald Oti, has explained how he escaped naked from a gang that kidnapped him about two weeks ago in Ebonyi State.Oti is also the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board, ESUBEB.

The actor was kidnapped from his home in Abakaliki, the state capital on April 22, 2017 about 8.30 pm and driven away in his Toyota Highlander SUV, to Ohatekwe forest in Ezza North Local Government Area of the state.

Accordin g to him, his abductors took everything he had on him and then stripped him naked.

While narrating his ordeal, Oti told newsmen that he was abducted by three serious looking men, who forced him into the boot of his vehicle.

He said, “They were three persons, two came down from their car while the third person who drove their own car remained inside the vehicle.

“The two men got into my vehicle. One drove my car while the other pointed a gun at my head where I was in the boot section of the SUV.

“They told me that someone sent them to kidnap me, warning that I should cooperate so that they would not kill me.
“They took everything I had with me and then asked for the PIN of my ATM card. They also asked me where I work and inquired whether the vehicle has a tracking device. They drove through Abakaliki metropolis without any policeman stopping them.

“Their own vehicle, a Toyota Sienna, was behind us.”

Oti said when they stopped near a forest, a vehement argument broke out between the kidnappers as to whether he should be shot or not. At this point, he felt an overpowering urge to run for his life.

As the argument continued between the gang, he ran into the dark forest, discountenancing any thought to slow down. As he was running in the darkness, he sustained injuries.

Fortunately for him, the kidnappers could not chase him through the forest in the dark.

According to him, “I came out from the forest completely nude and traumatized. I approached a woman for assistance but she immediately took to her heels. I met another man and he took off too.

“While I looked for safety and cover, I saw a flex banner that announced a burial that had taken place. I tore off the banner and wrapped it around my waist, to cover my nakedness.

“Then I walked across the expressway and got to the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. After identifying myself and explaining what happened, the people I met gave me boxer shorts to wear. I honestly don’t know the last time the boxer shorts had been worn, but I was very grateful for it. It was when I got to the police station that succour came to me. What actually helped the situation was that my wife was not also abducted with me.

“When I was taken away, she raised the alarm, and informed the police and my associates. Men of the police force sprang into action and were able to recover my SUV. And since then, they have been working hard to arrest the culprits.

“I am quite grateful to my neighbor, who is a retired naval officer. He alerted police and other security agents when he was informed about the abduction.

“The headquarters of the Ebonyi State Police Command, sent signals to all police divisions and stations as well as patrol teams and alerted them to watch out for the vehicle.”

He said on getting to the express, he reported to the police traffic post along Enugu-Abakiliki expressway and the policemen there reported to the police command headquarters about it.

According to him, he was taken to the headquarters where he met with the Commissioner of Police.

He added, “I want to commend the police for their indefatigable effort to recover my SUV and their continuing operations to track down and arrest the kidnappers. I am thankful to all the people who kept praying for my safe rescue. I owe all a huge debt of gratitude.

“I pray that the Lord God will bless every one of them. I am deeply thankful to my wife, for the right and prompt steps she took immediately after I was taken away. In fact, I can’t thank God enough for her,”

How to cook Yam Porridge with Bitter Leaves by Fgreen(m) : 2:54 am On May 10, 2017

Yam is used to make very fast and easy recipes. This is why it is a popular staple and you are sure to find it in every Nigerian pantry.

Traditional Igbo recipe alert: Preparing Yam Porridge with bitter leaves is one of the most traditional ways to prepare yam in Igboland.

You could swear that it is Bitterleaf Soup being cooked when it is in fact Yam Porridge. This is because most of the ingredients used in this recipe are used in Nigerian Bitterleaf Soup too.

Ingredients

1.8kg white puna yam
A handful dry fish crumbs (aja azu)
A handful ukpaka (shredded oil bean)
1 tablespoon ground crayfish
1 big stock cube
Salt & pepper (to taste)
A handful well-washed bitterleaves
Water
½ teaspoon Ogiri Igbo (castor seed paste)
Palm Oil (enough to colour the food)

Before you cook Yam Porridge

Peel and cut the yam tuber into medium cubes. Rinse the yam cubes and place in a sizeable pot.
Grind / Blend the pepper. Grind the crayfish. Set these aside.
Pick out the bones from the fish crumbs and rinse the fish.
You will be using washed and squeezed bitter leaves with no trace of bitterness so make sure this is ready.
When rinsing bitter leaves for Bitterleaf Soup, I usually set aside the tiny pieces that settle at the bottom for use in this traditional Yam Porridge. See video below. If you only have the long strands, cut them into pieces before using them in this recipe.

Cooking Directions

Set the pot with the yam cubes on a stove. Add the dry fish crumbs to the yam cubes.
Add ukpaka, crayfish, stock cube (crushed), pepper and bitter leaves. Try and distribute these on the yam cubes as you add them.
Pour water to just under the level of the yam cubes in the pot and start cooking on high heat.
When the contents of the pot boils very well, add the Ogiri Igbo and enough palm oil to give the Yam Porridge a nice appetising colour.
Cover the pot and continue cooking till the yam is well done and the surrounding liquid is beginning to thicken.
Add salt if necessary and stir very well.
Cover and cook for 2 minutes and it's done.
So so easy!

How to cook Nigerian Moi Moi by Fgreen(m) : 3:02 am On May 10, 2017

Moi Moi (also Moin Moin) is a great dish accessory in Nigeria. It is commonly seen accompanying Jollof Rice, Fried Rice, Fried Plantain, Custard, Akamu (Pap, Ogi) etc. It can even be eaten alone as a snack with a chilled soft drink to wash it down.

Due to its popularity, Moi Moi is often served at parties, dinners and other special occasions.

Ingredients

I usually cook Moi Moi in a large quantity and store in my freezer so the following quantities of ingredients make 12 aluminium bags of Moi Moi. Each bag weighs 420g.

3 cigar cups or 750g Beans (Brown/Black eyed)
5 tablespoons ground crayfish
4 big stock cubes
1 habanero pepper
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
3 tatashe peppers or 800g watery tomato puree (sold outside Nigeria)
2 big onions
20cl vegetable oil
2 litres of cool or warm water
Salt (to taste)

Moi Moi Accessories

Add any of the following to the Moi Moi

Hard boiled eggs: Cut the eggs into small pieces.
Bone Marrow: Cook the bone marrow with spices and herbs till done then add to the Moi Moi at the mixing stage.
Corned beef: separate into small chunks and add to the moi moi during mixing. You can also add to the moi moi after dishing then into cooking bowls or foil bags.
Moi Moi Containers

Aluminium foil or
Plastic Bowls or
Uma Leaves (Thaumatococcus Daniellii)
Jacket Moi Moi
Tools I used

Cooker
Deep Pot
Spatula
Chopping board
Blender
Knives

Notes on the ingredients

The tomato puree gives the Moi Moi its classic peachy colour. If you are in Nigeria, the best ingredient to use is tatashe pepper. I do not like the taste of red bell peppers in my Moi Moi hence I do not recommend it but you can try it and see if you like it.
Nutmeg gives the Moi Moi its classic taste. If you've ever eaten Nigerian Moi Moi at a party and wondered why it tastes better than the ones you make, it is probably because you do not add nutmeg to your Moi Moi.
2 litres of water is the exact quantity of water that gives me the perfect texture of Moi Moi that I and my family love. Please note that this qauntity includes the water used in blending the beans. If using bone marrow, the quantity of stock should be part of the 2 litres of liquid you will use in mixing the Moi Moi. If after using this quantity and you are not happy with the texture, adjust the quantity of water accordingly.
It is best to use cool or warm water when mixing Moi Moi. You do not want to use hot water for this purpose as it may cause the mix to be lumpy.
Using the right amount of oil in your Moi Moi ensures that it has a good texture and rolls off the tongue when you eat it but feel free to use any amount of oil you want. And it is advisable to use tastless and odourless oils in your Moi Moi so that rules out olive oil.

Before you cook Moi Moi

About three hours before cooking the moi moi, soak and wash the beans to remove the coat. When the entire coat has been removed, place the beans in a bowl and pour enough water to cover it. Leave to soak for three hours. This is so that the best consistency will be achieved when you blend the beans.
It is advisable to use one of eggs, bone marrow or corned beef, not the three at the same time. If you will use eggs, cook till hard boiled, cut into small pieces and set aside. If you prefer bone marrow, cook it with salt and Maggi / Knorr cubes and set aside the stock. If it is corned beef you will go for, open the can and separate the beef into small lumps.
Now go ahead and prepare the moi moi containers.
Next ...

Wash the tatashe pepper (if using it). Ensure you remove the tatashe seeds as they have a tendency to give meals a bitter taste.
Cut the onions into pieces, grind the crayfish with a dry mill. If using the heavy duty grinder in Nigerian markets, these won't be necessary.
Crush the stock cubes and set aside. Wash the habanero/scotch bonnet peppers and set aside.
Now that the beans is soaked (the bean seed is tender when you pinch it), it is time to blend it. It is very important that you use a very good blender for this purpose. The taste and feel of your Moi Moi depends so much on the consistency of the blend. If in doubt, put a small quantity of bean seeds in your home blender and grind to the best of its ability using as small quantity of water as possible. Feel the resulting paste with your fingers and if you notice any tiny pieces at all, then the blender is not good for Moi Moi. At this time, you may consider using the commercial heavy duty mills at your local market if you are in Nigeria. Yes, you have your health and hygiene concerns but most of the mill operators actually keep their mills clean. And they let you bring your own water and containers. So there you go!
Cooking Directions

Blend the beans, tatashe or tomato puree, onions, crayfish, habanero pepper and ground nutmeg together with some of the water and pour the mix into a big enough bowl.
Add the vegetable oil and the bone marrow stock (if this is what you have chosen to add to your moi moi).
Slowly add the remaining water and stir the mixture at the same time till you get a good mix of all the ingredients.
Add salt to taste and stir very well.
Note: Moi Moi is one of the Nigerian food recipes that is prepared cold. All the mixing and adding of ingredients is done off the stove. That is to say, once you start cooking, there is no going back! You cannot decide to add more salt or seasoning or a new ingredient later. So getting it right at the mixing stage is very important.
Pad the base of a big pot, pour some water and set on the stove. The depth of the water should be at most 1 inch.
Dish the Moi moi mix into containers of your choice, add egg/bone marrow/corned beef to each container, seal/cover and set them in the pot.
Add as small quantity of water as possible at a time while cooking the Moi Moi as detailed in preparation and use of moi moi containers so that the moi moi will not become watery when done. This is the case especially when using aluminium foil or uma leaves.
The length of time you will cook your Moi Moi depends on the quantity and the Moi Moi container you used.
The Moi Moi that gets done quickest is the one wrapped in Uma or Banana leaves, followed by Moi Moi wrapped in aluminum foils then the one that takes the most time is Moi Moi cooked in aluminium or plastic plates.
But whatever Moi Moi container you use, it is advisable to cook your Moi Moi for at least 1 hour, before checking it. Confirm that it is done by putting a knife through it, if the knife is stained with Moi Moi paste, then the Moi Moi is not done, but if the knife just has a slight smear of Moi Moi, then it's done. Also, when you cut through the Moi Moi, the insides will be set and not watery.
If you are cooking a few wraps of Moi Moi in a small pot on high heat, then it will only take about 45 minutes to get done while when you are cooking a large pot of Moi Moi, it will definitely take more than one hour.
Serve with chilled fruit juice or coconut juice. Serve as a side dish to Jollof Rice, Fried Rice or Fried Plantains. For breakfast, serve with Custard or Akamu (Pap, Ogi).
