Mobbing Of Nigerian Movie Stars In The United States by Fgreen(m) : 12:22 am On May 09, 2017

Recently, A group of Nigerian Movie Stars visited the United States of America. By the time they traveled to Washington DC and returned to New York City, word had gone round that they were in town.

Fans of these actors/actresses from around the tri-state area were in abundance to meet and interact with their idols whose home movies they have repeatedly watched (though mostly through boot-leg/pirated copies). The venue at The Marriott Hotel where the reception was held was full to capacity despite the $50.00 ticket per head.

A group of Nigerian Movie Stars visited the United States of America.

Incidentally, the night did not last long for the excitable fans who waited long into the night before having a glimpse of a few of their idols.

About a few minutes into the presentation of the actors/actresses, there was an uncontrolled rush by the fans to reach the stars on stage. Fearing for their lives, the overwhelmed actors/actresses withdrew from stage as the crowd of fans persistently surged towards them. For a few fans the momentary glance was better than nothing.

For many others, the event was a flop, and they demanded immediate refund of their money since they did not get to meet and spend time with their idols. Most of the actors and actresses were surprised that they will be mobbed in the United States unlike in Nigeria. Some of them took it in stride and wisdom. It is hoped that the fanfare did not carry some of the stars away.

However, casual opinion poll results indicate that most of the stars like Olu Jacobs, Emeka Ike, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Francis Onwochie, and many others were outstanding in their humility despite the excitement of the crowd about seeing them. Many Africans resident in the United States saw the behavior of the crowd as an insult and distanced themselves while some others did not care.

While the Nigerian Movie stars came to the United States, got mobbed, and may have returned to Nigeria, it is pertinent to ask if there are any underlying implications in the manner they were received. Is there more than the mobbing that many witnessed?

What are the latent lessons for the African movie industry, theater, culture, and entertainment business in general? Two previous articles that I had written before the visit of the Nigerian movie Stars to the United States might appear to be prophetic with regard to the preceding questions.

In “Compensation of The African Artist,” I had said: “...one would wonder why little recognition has been given to African Artists, arts and entertainment when compared to the accolades and awards showered on their Western counterparts. Despite the richness of talent possessed and displayed by the African artist, it is still difficult to place an African artist side by side (financially) with other renowned artists of the world.

Yes, Africans have won a few awards here and there for their great artistic works but is the African artist recognized for his worth and value?” How far these stars have gone to win the hearts of fellow Africans is evident in the warm reception they received from such Africans when they visited the United States. In another related piece titled “Suggestions For The Sustenance of African Artistic Heritage,”

I had mentioned the impact of Nollywood in today’s African entertainment regeneration. I had gone on to say: “The happy throng of fans in Sierra Leone pleasantly mobbed the Nigerians and accorded them a Presidential hospitality. Such is an example of how some Africans show their appreciation of their own. It is perhaps proper to mention here that African Artists will not receive such warm reception from the American public in The United States, at least not for now.

Why then the craze for Hollywood?

Nollywood is surviving by itself and Nigerian filmmakers are extending their activities to Sierra Leone in helping to build the film industry there.” True to their African nature, Africans in the United States did come out to welcome their stars but did the American general population show the same support or was it only an African affair?

It is perhaps important to mention at this point that most of the fans that trooped to the Marriott in New York to see the Nigerian Movie Stars were not only Nigerians. In fact they were mostly Africans from other countries than Nigeria.

However, the underlying question is: How many Americans were there? Many Americans enjoy African entertainment, but how many of them were eager to meet the Nigerian Movie Stars? How many state or federal officials were there? How many American mainstream newspapers or televisions carried the news of these stars in their prominent columns?

Some have argued that the organizers may not have reached out to the American media, but need the American media be begged to cover an event that featured a conglomeration of Africa’s promising movie industry talents? Like I had emphasized in the two articles I cited above, we Africans have to recognize our own in the proper way if we want the world to recognize us. Recognition does not simply mean to take pictures with our African stars or to interact with them.

It goes beyond that. To start with, we must encourage their works by buying or paying for their works at reasonable prices and from genuine sources. If we love these stars, we should buy their tapes at a price that will put some money in their pockets. We should start our Awards Night like the Oscars. We need not wait for the Oscars to recognize our talents.

We have to think of building our version of Hollywood. With due respect, the organizers of Western Merit/performance Awards like the Oscars and the Globe, may not recognize the cultural essentials in an African artistic performance. The Tribeca Film Festival just started in Manhattan and the news is all over.

Big names such as Robert Deniro and a host of others were there to open it. Radio and television stations announced it arrival over and over, and they are still reporting on it. Meanwhile, almost nothing is heard about the African Film Festival that started weeks ago in the same Manhattan.

Apart from a few African Magazines such as www.AfricanEvents.com and www.AfricanTheaterUSA.com that announced and gave coverage to the event, other National media channels have been relatively moot about it though we had some big African Films and Filmmakers in the schedule. Granted, a few African American stars such as Ossie Davis made effort to identify with the stars from Nigeria, it is not clear however, whether any significant number of the stars utilized the networking opportunities provided by the trip.

I am sure some of the stars made their connections while some may have been more interested in the fanfare. This piece addresses the professional welfare of the African artist and it will amount to a failure of service if it fails to caution any of the stars wishing to stay back in the United States not to base such decision merely on the impression of the crowd that cheered and yearned to see and touch them during the trip.

When the dust settles, the American environment will play itself out as the leveler it is, and such artist would most likely have to pay his/her dues to get back to the top. After all said and done, one good side to the clamor for the Nigerian Movie Stars on their visit to the United States is the fact that the stars now know how much influence they could wield and how much impact they could make with their work as movie makers, producers, directors, actors, and actresses. Perhaps now, they can wake up to the fact that the Nigerian movie Industry is such a useful channel in the exportation and dissemination of African culture through entertainment.

Younger Africans who are Africa’s future in this part of the Diaspora dominated the crowd at the Marriott. What they learn from those Nigerian movies they love to watch go a long way to help build their understanding of African culture, especially for those who are not able to visit Africa or live in it to learn the African culture. Nigerian (African) movies can no longer afford to be only commercial oriented without a good African cultural message. Africans all over the world hold the Nigerian movie industry in high regard. So, Uncle Olu Jacobs, brother Zack Orji, my friend Fred Amata, and all others who witnessed the Marriott experience, we have to get back to the drawing board. The work has just begun.

Unfounded speculations about Buhari’s health should stop – Tinubu by Fgreen(m) : 1:12 am On May 09, 2017

Samson Folarin

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari, saying Nigerians should give him a chance to finish what he started.

Tinubu, while recounting the achievements of the Buhari administration, urged Nigerians to stop unfounded speculations about the President’s health.

He also urged Nigerians to continue to believe in Buhari’s ability to deliver on his electoral promises.

The APC leader, whose position was contained in a statement he personally signed on Sunday, said he trusted the President to make the right decision as regards his health, adding that there was no need for panic.

He said, “President Buhari has moved us from the path of failure to a path where we have a fighting chance to realise a better nation. Had we stuck to the ways of the former administration, our present situation would be worse than untenable. Those who publicly speculate about the issue of the President’s health must keep all of this in mind. Much is at stake. We owe a responsibility to be wise and circumspect in what is spoken into the public ear.

“We voted for President Buhari because we trusted his ability to make decisions regarding complex issues of state. If we can trust him to handle difficult matters of governance, we can also trust him to make correct decisions regarding his personal health. The President Buhari I have come to know is an honest and responsible man and a leader.”

The former Lagos State governor noted that when the President returned to the country from his medical trip on March 10, he disclosed his health condition without holding anything back.

He added that those who speculated about the President’s health out of concern should, however, not be condemned.

“They should be advised not to allow fear to ambush their better judgment and their courage. They should not give themselves to idle speculation. We should not buy into the myth of some cabal at work. Dwelling in empty speculation on the existence of some mythic cabal is not what the country needs at present. From what I can see, the President remains at the helm and his policies are being implemented.

“Those who truly care about the President and the important work he still must do should not allow themselves to become the unwitting tools of the regressive forces. We must stand with and beside our President. The unfounded speculation around his health should stop. We must not covet fear and rumour but should engage our creativity and enterprise to help the President accomplish his historic mission. Our greatest energies should be focused on righting this economy so that it provides a decent livelihood for all people. This critical path towards economic recovery must be followed for the sake of our children,” he said.

Baby, WASSCE results burnt in fire incidents by Fgreen(m) : 1:19 am On May 09, 2017

A seven-day-old baby was killed, while copies of West African Senior School Certificate Examination results were burnt after fire broke out in the Makoko and Satellite Town areas of Lagos State on Saturday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the baby was burnt to death in Makoko after the fire started around 6pm.

It was gathered that a resident was cooking on a stove, but later left it unattended to.

A firefighter said, “We gathered that a woman was cooking food; she left the place and forgot it.

“The fire started from there and razed a lot of makeshift structures to the ground.

“In the confusion that greeted the incident, the parents of the child left him inside the house. By the time they remembered that he was in the house and tried to rescue him, it was too late. The child had been burnt to death. He was supposed to be named today (Sunday).

“Four fire trucks from the Lagos State Fire Service responded to a distress call from the area and put out the fire in the early hours of Sunday.”

In the second fire incident, our correspondent learnt that an electric spark from a cable triggered the fire, which damaged 32 flats.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the house used to be a school, known as Stepping Stone Comprehensive Girls College.

A firefighter, who was at the scene, said while a woman was injured, copies of burnt WASSCE results were found in the building.

He said, “The place used to be a school. It was converted to 32 apartments. A woman was injured, while WASSCE results of many former students were burnt. We cannot tell the number of results, but they were many.

“Also, 11 gas cylinders were burnt, with seven air conditioners. About 20 families were affected. It was the state fire service that initially responded before the Federal Fire Service was also called. The fire was put out around 12.25am on Sunday.”

The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the agency’s zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, advised the owner of the complex to gather the mutilated certificates and report the incident to WASSCE for issuance of Certified True Copies of the affected certificates.

Farinloye, who said he could not explain why the certificates were still in the building after the conversion of the building to residential flats, said investigations were ongoing.

Ritual killers h*ck couple, children to death by Fgreen(m) : 1:26 am On May 09, 2017

Afeez Hanafi

A gang of assailants, suspected to be ritual killers, has wreaked havoc on a family of six in Adeke bus stop, Adamo, Imota, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The couple – Taofiq Agbaje and Simiat Agbaje, 32, – and two of their four children, Rodiat, 10, and eight-year-old Toyeebat, were hacked to death by the gang.

The two other siblings, Mardiya, 13 and her one-year-old sister reportedly sustained injuries.

This happened barely three weeks after another couple and their only child were murdered in Ibese Titun, a neighbouring community,

The attacks were allegedly perpetrated by members of a notorious gang called Badoo.

In what seemed to be their usual modus operandi, PUNCH Metro gathered that the attackers gained entrance into the Agbajes’ three-bedroomed flat in the night after tearing the window net and removing some burglar-proof bars.

They were said to have smashed some objects on their victims and wiped away their blood with handkerchiefs, leaving them for dead.

Our correspondent gathered that a neighbour, who had gone to get lemon juice from the family around 6am on Tuesday, saw the victims and called for help.

It was gathered that Taofiq and two children died on the spot, while his wife, Rodiat, and the toddler were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The case was reported at the Imota Police Division.

Simiat’s uncle, Adisa Ismaila, said he was at work on Tuesday when he received the tragic news.

“On getting to the house, I met the corpses of her husband and two children on the ground. There was a big stone beside them. The gang wiped their blood with a piece of cloth. The mother and the two other children were taken to the hospital, while we buried the deceased according to Islamic rites.

“The following day, the mother also gave up the ghost. We buried her beside them. Mardiya and her sister have recovered and have been taken to our hometown in Iwo (Osun State) for proper care. When policemen from the division asked Mardiya what transpired, she could not explain,” he said.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that a generator was working at the time of the attack, adding that its noise deafened the neighbours.

He said, “Around 6am, one of the neighbours, a woman, needed lemon for her child, who was having a stomach ache. She went to get it from Iya Mardiya (Simiat). She saw Mardiya crawling on the passage. She could no longer talk. She pointed at their room and the woman rushed in only to discover other family members lying helplessly.

“They used to live in the Agric area. They moved into this area four years ago when they completed their house. We call on the security agencies to please do something.”

A community leader, who did not want his name in print for security reasons, lamented that “there is little or no improvement,” despite several petitions to Governor Akinwumi Ambode and some other commissioners in the state.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said identities of the assailants had yet to be known.

He said, “The command responded to a distress call from a resident and discovered that one Taofeek Agbaje and his family were attacked at night by unknown persons. As a result, Mr. Agbaje and his two daughters, between seven and nine years, died, while his wife and two other daughters, aged two and 12 years, sustained injuries respectively and were taken to a hospital. Investigations are in progress.”

$5m suit: Confess your sins, Apostle Suleman urges Otobo by Fgreen(m) : 2:30 am On May 09, 2017

Friday Olokor, Jos

The General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman, on Sunday, advised his Canada-based accuser, Stephanie Otobo, to confess her sins for the allegations levelled against him before claiming to have repented.

The cleric also demanded to see, among other things, “the explosive incontrovertible evidence” she had boasted about; the travel documents “she promised to reveal and the nude pictures she claimed to have in her possession.”

While urging the public to take her claim of being ‘born again’ with a pinch of salt, the cleric said Otobo must provide answers to some salient questions over allegations that he had amorous relationship with her before she could be believed.

Suleman in a statement by his Communications Manager, Phrank Shaibu, expressed doubts about Otobo’s new claim of being born again, coming on the heels of the fresh suit instituted by her against him in Canada.

He stated, “A girl, who lied that she had her marriage introduction in the Apostle’s office, should be honest enough to do her damage control in the office of the court where she filed her suit by providing supporting proof rather than this suspicious ‘handing it over to the Lord’ when the time came for her to have her day in court.

“Apostle Johnson Suleman has refused to be blackmailed and his refusal has frustrated his accuser and her sponsors who now hope that this issue will die a natural death but you cannot play with the Lord’s servant and now go to Him without first confessing.”

The cleric pointed out that repentance must come before her accuser could claim to be born again.

Suleman added, “After besmirching the reputation of a man that she has never physically met, Stephanie Otobo, who filed a suit for $5m against Apostle Johnson Suleman in a Canadian court in abuse of court process, now claims she is born again and wants to put the whole saga behind her and forget the matter and withdraw the case?

“Her father called her a liar. Her mother called her a liar. Her best friend said she was a blackmailer and when given the chance to prove them all wrong, she suddenly becomes born again? No! We refuse to accept that. He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. He who comes to the Lord must come with contrition.”

Widow accuses son, wife of attacking her over property by Fgreen(m) : 2:35 am On May 09, 2017

Samson Folarin

A widow, Mrs. Racheal Olaniyan, says she has fled her home on Olowu Street, Ipaja, Lagos State, over alleged assault by her son, Kehinde, and his wife, Shade.

Rachael, who claimed to be critically ill, told PUNCH Metro that she was beaten by Shade sometime in March.

She alleged that Kehinde, who supported the attack, stole her land documents.

The 67-year-old said efforts to report the attack and alleged theft to the police were frustrated because Kehinde was a riot policeman.

She said when she could not get justice, she sought refuge in a Lagos church where she had been staying.

Rachel said, “On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, I opened the door to my apartment in order to go out when Shade attacked me by pouring watery pepper into my eyes. As soon as I fell, she started hitting me with a plank until I became unconscious.

“When I woke up, I used the little strength in me to go to the neighbouring house to show my swollen face to some community leaders.

“When I returned home, Shade’s husband, Kehinde, had returned home and when I showed him what his wife had done, he started laughing at me.”

Rachael said while she was having the discussion with her son at another time, another female tenant attacked her.

The sexagenarian said she escaped into the house, where she was incapacitated for about seven days.

“By Saturday, March 25, I went out to see the community leaders again to report to them. However, before I could return, Kehinde had burgled my room and stolen the documents of my house. When I challenged him, he laughed at me.

“I collapsed on March 27, 2017, and was rushed to a hospital. I have spent a lot of money and my health has worsened as a result of the attack I suffered from Kehinde’s wife and the tenant, who is also the wife of a policeman.

“When I went to the Alagolo Police Station, Ipaja, to report this case, nothing was done, as Kehinde used his influence as a policeman to stall the case. I also submitted a petition to the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, and I was directed it to the Provost’s Office,” she added.

She lamented that instead of the police to charge the suspects to court, they were released and asked to sign an undertaking.

Racheal said while she had yet to recover her land documents from Kehinde, the suspects were back in the house and she had been forced to vacate it for her safety.

She urged the police to give her justice, adding that she wanted the suspects to face the wrath of the law for the injuries inflicted on her.

She said, “They should face the full wrath of the law, instead of writing undertakings. This is not the first time they will be writing undertakings without keeping to them.”

One of Rachel’s children, Taiwo, said he vacated the house due to frequent clashes among the children of the family over the property.

He said, “Mama has six children and there is rivalry among them. It is not just about the property; this has been on since the house was built. We don’t love one another and that was why I left the place. The house documents were with Mama, but her children are struggling for them and Mama appeared not ready to release them to anyone. Kehinde took the documents for safekeeping since we all know Mama could pass on anytime soon.”

Kehinde, however, denied the allegations, accusing his siblings of ganging up against him.

He said, “Is it possible for me as the first child of the family to watch while my wife beats up my mother? That cannot be possible. It was my siblings that taught Mama all these lies in order to get at me. Mama had reported this case to different police stations before it got to the state police command. I was called to answer her petition, which I did. At the end of the day, I gave her a document, which content I will not disclose. Please don’t call me as regards this case again.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, had yet to respond to a text message sent to him on the incident as of press time.
