5 Retirement financial planning tips to consider by Abraham662(m) : 8:22 pm On Jul 20, 2019

5 Retirement Financial Planning Tips to Consider

Everyone wants to live a comfortable life after retiring from a long career. However, the kind of life that you will live is usually determined by the plans you made while you were still working. The reason why people prepare for retirement is because it’s not possible to engage in business or employment in your sunset years.

And for you to create a solid retirement plan, you must first create a framework of how you will achieve your objective. The good thing is that such a plan will ensure that you are able to sustain yourself. On the other hand, failure to plan for retirement in advance will land you in hot soup.

Without a reliable source of income, you will be as broke as a church mouse. Here is a list of tips you can follow when planning for retirement, regardless of whether you are an entrepreneur or an employee.

Clear your Debts
Pending debts can really be a stumbling block when you want to move towards financial freedom. Considering that every loan comes with an interest rate, you may not have any money to spare for a rainy day when your debt keeps growing. The best way of avoiding such trouble is by paying every single cent that you owe to any creditor. When you are debt free, you will be able to scale the heights of financial success in your retirement without worrying that your creditors will come for your investments later. In fact, you should start with the small debts and finish with the huge ones.

Buy health and Life Insurance Cover
They say that your health is your greatest asset. Even if you consider yourself rich, it’s advisable you get health insurance cover. This is because paying for medical expenses can eat into your retirement savings. Sometimes you are left without an option but to dispose of your assets. When you have health insurance, your medical expenses are taken care of by the insurance provider. This will help in ensuring that you don’t withdraw money that you had set aside for future use. It’s also a good idea to invest in life insurance as it caters for the needs of your dependants in case you die.

Start Saving Early
Most people don’t think about saving for retirement immediately they start earning a living. This is probably because they think they have all the time. In fact, it’s advisable you start saving as early as possible. The advantage is that you will be able to recover from any drawbacks such as illness or short durations of unemployment without missing your retirement target. Besides that, you will benefit from the power of compounding. You should actually cut back on your expenses so that you can have more money for keeping in a safe nest.

Invest your Savings
It makes no sense to keep your money in a bank when you can invest it and make more returns. After you have accumulated considerable savings, you should invest it wisely. Instead of putting your eggs in one basket, you should consider investing in different portfolios. This helps in cushioning your investment in case one portfolio fails to yield the returns you had earlier anticipated for. For instance, you can diversify into real estate, stocks, mutual funds and bonds.

Consult a Financial Advisor
Most people are overwhelmed by the thought of planning for their retirement. This is because the majority of them don’t know what to look for when choosing an investment portfolio. If you are in this league, it’s advisable you consult an experienced retirement financial planner. The benefit of involving such professionals is that they can help you make informed decisions when you want to secure your future. Besides that, the recommendations that they offer are those that have already been tried and tested.

Nigeria needs an extreme makeover and Buhari isn't the man for the job
Several people have died and dozens are feared trapped after a building containing scores of school children collapsed in Nigeria .
The three-storey building, which housed a private school on the top floor, is thought to have come down at around 10am local time in Lagos on Wednesday.
Rescuers are understood to have pulled more than 25 children from the rubble, although local residents say the school has around 100 pupils on its books.
Akinwunmi Ambode, the governor of Lagos State, said during a visit to the scene that multiple people had been killed in the incident, offering his condolences to the victims’ families.
Mr Ambode added the school had been set up illegally and that buildings in the area were undergoing integrity testing.

Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, said: “It is believed that many people including children are currently trapped in the building. The third floor of the building is housing a private school in the area.”
Workers on top of the rubble shovelled debris away as thousands of people swarmed around the rescue site.
Many people at the scene were shouting and screaming. A fight almost broke out as anger at the collapse boiled over.
Ambulances, fire trucks and a fork lift were at the scene with rescuers from the Red Cross and police on hand.
Building collapses happen frequently in Nigeria, with weak enforcement of building regulations and poor construction materials often used.
In 2016, more than 100 people were killed when a church came down in southeastern Nigeria

Excerpts:
What do you make of the latest letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari?
As far as I am concerned, this latest letter written by Obasanjo, who is supposed to be an elder statesman having been the President of this country twice, is most unhelpful and clearly mischievous. Look, for a nation going through not only very traumatic moment but also grappling with economic, security and very many other challenges, Obasanjo’s letter is the least anybody could have done to give the impression that he wants to be perpetually relevant. Yes, it is necessary that people in government need to be told what the mood in the land is and what they need to do in order to satisfy the needs of the citizenry. But I must say that what Obasanjo has done does not, in any way, promote national consciousness and merely tilted to promoting self-interest. His so-called letter was clearly ill-timed, written purposely to inflict maximum damage on the country. For a man in his 80s, who has been blessed with good health and has also benefited from this country more than any other individual that I know of, to come and make the kind of statement he made was clearly an act of disservice.
If you examine some of the issues he touched on such as security and economy, you would discover that Obasanjo was quite economical with the truth. If you look at what he calls Fulanisation and Islamisation of Nigeria, one would see that he is not only ignorant in his view but also mischievous as a former Head of State. I am certain that if Obasanjo’s motive is to use his so-called letters to blackmail the Buhari government, which is not my government because I am not in Buhari’s party, he has failed because these letters are banal, illogical and futile. The so-called letters do not enlighten anybody in or outside Nigeria. I suspect that Obasanjo simply believes that by writing the series of letters to Buhari, he would be able to blackmail the government or the country and get something; perhaps, what he has been craving for all the while, something that is relevant to him. But I can assure him that even within his Yoruba race, he cannot get anything out of them. Obasanjo should be very careful about what he says concerning Fulani herdsmen and land matters because he is one of the biggest owners of land in this country and should know that whatever he says has the potential to influence certain actions.
Again, because of the positions that he has occupied in this country, the former Head of State should be concerned about his actions and utterances. That is why I find what he said outrightly false and condemnable and I believe that someday, he is going to be held to account either in life or perhaps he is going to be called to account by history. I want those who are inciting and heating up the polity to realise that if by their actions and utterances, war breaks out today, all of them would be affected just like other Nigerians. I do not see how they can easily escape the war that their actions can trigger and leave others behind to be roasted. That is why every Nigerian must be extremely careful in what they say and

Borno: Supreme Court rules in suits against Gov Zulum, Kyari Daily Post 16:28 by Abraham662(m) : 7:10 am On Jul 22, 2019

The Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja has dismissed an appeal filed by Alhaji Idris Mamman Gatumba, a director at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, challenging the election of Professor Babagana Umara Zulum as Governor of Borno State.
The court also dismissed a similar appeal filed by Kaakenna Alkali Monguno, who was challenging the election of Senator Abubakar Shaib Kyari representing Borno north.
In details of proceeding released at the weekend, the panel of five justices led by Justice John Inyang Okoro, dismissed both appeals for lacking in merit.
Idris and Kaakenna, who separately challenged the September/October, 2018 APC primaries in Borno State, approached the apex court after losing at both the Court of Appeal in Jos and the Federal High Court in Maiduguri.
At the Supreme Court, counsel to Idris and Kaakenna, I K Bawa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, filed his briefs of arguments, praying the court to invoke its powers and set aside the concurrent judgements of the Jos and Maiduguri courts.
The counsel wanted the court to remove Zulum and Kyari from office and declare Idris and Kaakenna validly elected as Borno Governor and Senator.
However, counsel to the Governor and Senator Kyari, Yusuf Ali, SAN, represented in court by K K Eleja, also a senior advocate, argued that the appeals were statute barred hence lacking in merit.
He argued that the appeals be summarily dismissed to which all five judges agreed.

Odigie-Oyegun, Oshiomhole disagree over Assembly crisis, APC asks Obaseki to obe by Abraham662(m) : 5:21 pm On Jul 22, 2019

Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) , Chief John Odigie- Oyegun , and his successor , Comrade Adams Oshiomhole , have taken a separate stance on the crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly .
Reacting to the moves by the House of Representatives to take over the activities of the chamber , Odigie-Oyegun fingered the erstwhile labour leader as the mastermind .
In a statement yesterday by his Public Affairs Adviser, Chief Ray Murphy , the former governor said he was yet to come to terms with Oshiomhole ’ s forgetting so soon that he ( Odigie-Oyegun ) never meddled in Edo affairs as the national chairman of the ruling party while he ( Oshiomhole ) held forte as state chief executive.
Odigie- Oyegun maintained that Governor Godwin Obaseki deserved to be supported as the only state helmsman on the APC platform in the entire South - South geopolitical zone instead of being made to contend with agents of destabilisation within the party .
Odigie- Oyegun also wondered why Oshiomhole , who claimed to have buried godfatherism in Edo politics, would “now turn around to play god . ”
But the Chief Press Secretary (CPS ) to Oshiomhole , Simon Ebegbulem , in a statement said : “ Chief Odigie- Oyegun is a respected leader of the party and an elder statesman . Comrade Oshiomhole has so much respect for him . If he really wants to address Oshiomhole , he can come out openly to address the man who succeeded him in office and not one Murphy . ”
Besides , the ruling party yesterday asked Governor Godwin Obaseki to obey the resolution of the lower chamber of the National Assembly by issuing a fresh proclamation .
Its National Publicity Secretary , Malam Lanre Issa - Onilu , told a press conference in Abuja that it was “ unfortunate that the impunity associated with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) has found its way into an APC government in Edo State . ”
The party insisted that the position of the House of Representatives on the issue was in line with the 1999 Constitution ( as amended ).
However , Odigie- Oyegun urged the immediate intervention of the Progressive Governors Forum .
The top politician pleaded with the governors not to remain aloof and watch their colleagues ‘ suffer ’ in the hands of a single individual whose actions might lead to the political misfortune of the party .
Odigie- Oyegun stated : “ The recent outburst by Governor ( Godwin) Obaseki and the report by the House of Representatives ad hoc committee indicating the current National Chairman of the APC have confirmed my earlier claim that Oshiomhole is not only the architect but also the one fuelling the crisis in Edo State . ”
“ In the face of these confirmations, I want to urge Oshiomhole to stop disgracing the ruling party and the good people of Edo State . I wonder how he could easily forget that I never interfered or bothered about how he ran the government as the then governor of Edo State all the while I occupied the position of the party ’ s national chairman .
“ I am yet to understand why it has become difficult for Oshiomhole to realise that Governor Obaseki is the only APC governor in the entire South - South and should be allowed to concentrate on delivering democracy dividends to Edo people.
“ It is shocking that a man , who claimed to have buried godfatherism in the Edo State politics , could become enmeshed in playing god to his successor . Oshiomhole is not only guilty of godfatherism but also of anti -party activities considering the ignorable role he has been playing and his shameful involvement in the whole Edo crisis . ”
He went on : “ Rather than dissipating energy in fomenting more crises , Oshiomhole should rather concentrate in ensuring that the Federal Government policies conform with the party ’ s manifesto and campaign promises to the good people of this country.
“ I appeal to him once more to stop disgracing the governing APC and Edo State . He should give the governor a breathing space to concentrate on the job of serving the people of Edo State .
“ I want to also appeal to the Progressives Governors Forum not to stand aside and watch their fellow governor hampered by a party chairman whose actions may lead to political misfortune of the party in the state . ”

Election: PDP/Presidency disagree over $1bn security fund spending by Abraham662(m) : 5:29 pm On Jul 22, 2019

Ndubuisi Orji, and Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday raised the alarm over the statement by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Mongunu, that he was not aware of the whereabouts of $1 billion approved from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) to boost security in the country.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has denied allegations by the PDP that President Buhari spent N1 billion approved for security in prosecuting the 2019 elections.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement, explained that $490 million of the money was spent to order for a dozen Super Tucano fighter aircraft in a direct government-to-government (no contractors or commission agents) transaction with government of the United States.
The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the NSA’s “confession,” places a huge burden on President Muhammadu Buhari as to how the fund, which was meant to combat insurgency, banditry and other security challenges plaguing the country, was utilised.
Monguno had on Thursday last week, in Abuja, while fielding questions from journalists, reportedly denied knowledge of the whereabouts of the $1billon, which was withdrawn from the ECA in 2017 to tackle insecurity in the country.
However, the opposition party noted that the NSA stance on the $1billion security fund has confirmed its position that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration is allegedly corrupt, deceptive and unreliable.
“It further validates the stance of the PDP that agents of the Buhari presidency and the APC were hiding under the guise of security to siphon the $1bn from the ECA. This, perhaps, informed the desperation by the cabal to draw from the account without recourse to statutory due process of appropriation by the National Assembly.
“From Gen. Mongunu’s confession, Nigerians can further see why our nation is daily confronted with disturbing videos and reports of our fighting troops protesting their neglect and inadequate equipping, leading to their vulnerability in the fronts.
“Now that the National Security Adviser has declared that he is not aware of the whereabouts of funds, the burden, straightaway, lies squarely on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately address the nation on how the money was handled.
“This is especially as there are already allegations in the public space that certain funds meant for security were diverted for 2019 campaign activities of the APC while our troops languished in the front.
“Our party had always alerted Nigerians that the APC administration was insincere in the handling of the ECA fund leading to our demand in 2017 for the National Assembly to investigate the handling of the $1bn,” the PDP stated.
Shehu said: “We are reacting to PDP that the USD drawn from the excess crude oil account was spent by Buhari on 2019 elections. “The PDP is under a socio-emotional distress. They think that all governments in the world run on the basis of freewheeling looting as they did their own.
“Here is what happened to that USD 1,000 million.
“It’s on record that the Buhari administration paid about USD 490 million for a dozen Super Tucano fighter aircraft in a direct, government-to-government (no contractors or commission agents) transaction with government of the United States
“Various other military procurements have been made. Balance of expenditure stands at about USD 880 million or so.
“Barring considerations of national security, the details of the stage of implementation, the procurements made and the suppliers will be obtained and if your story can wait until tomorrow Monday, a work day, we can give you more or all of the details.
“The PDP spent defence procurement funds on their failed 2015 political campaigns as proven in court. That is not to say every succeeding government, more so one led by a Buhari will do the same.”

NNPC Records N6.33 Billion Trade Surplus In May -Report by Abraham662(m) : 5:43 pm On Jul 22, 2019

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it recorded a trade surplus of N6.33 billion for the month of May, 13 percent higher than the N5.60 billion surplus made in April.
The corporation disclosed this in its Monthly and Operations report (MFOR) released on Sunday in Abuja
It attributed the rise to the increase in gas and power output and surplus recorded by the corporation’s downstream entities like NNPC Retail, Petroleum Products Marketing Company(PPMC), Nigerian Pipelines Security Company(NPSC) and Duke Oil.
The report further indicated that within the period, the NNPC recorded a total of 580.32 million dollars in the export sale of crude oil and gas which is 23.39 percent higher than the previous month’s figure.
"Out of this number, crude oil export sales contributed 458.59 million dollars which translates to 79.02 percent of the entire dollar transactions compared with 342.11 million dollars contributed in the month of May,” it said
It also showed that between May 2018 and May 2019, crude oil and gas worth 5.97 billion dollars were exported.
On the downstream, the report noted that for the corporation to ensure uninterrupted supply and effective distribution of petrol across the country, a total of 2.06 billion litres of petrol translating to 66.49mn liters/day were supplied for the month of May.
It noted that beyond supply, the corporation continued to monitor the daily stock of petrol to achieve smooth distribution of petroleum products and zero fuel queue across the nation.
“Within the period, a total of 60 pipeline points were vandalized which represents a 52 percent decrease from the 125 points vandalized in April.
“The Atlas Cove-Mosimi and Ibadan-Ilorin pipelines accounted for 38 percent and 23 percent respectively and other locations accounted for the remaining 39 percent of the total breaks,” the report said.
The report attributed the improvement to the spirited efforts by NNPC in collaboration with the local communities and other stakeholders to continuously strive to reduce and eventually eliminate this menace.
The May 2019 NNPC MFOR is the 46th in the series, designed to provide greater transparency and remove the perception of opacity associated with the operations of the national oil company, News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Superior aggression theory and the herdsme by Abraham662(m) : 5:55 pm On Jul 22, 2019

Seventy-one years after the physical departure of colonial powers, Nigeria still embody the trappings of colonialism. In what way does the sequence of events from ‘fulanisation’ alert by the Owu chief prepares the way for the ‘rugalisation’ agenda . Does the dynamic deployment of concepts (ranching, colony, ruga) show us a pattern of late arrivals (herdsmen) and their utilisation of superior political agency to actualise their goal of accumulation by dispossession? Modern-day realities and unfolding cleavages in Aso Rock policies and politics signpost a colonial contraption sliding into unholy matrimony known as Nigeria. Is it possible to unpack how a government that cries of paucity of fund to revitalise university education and health manage to set aside funds for the revitalisation of cattle economy?

Despite the unpredictability of human behaviours, sociologists make predictions based on documented patterns and regularity. To analyse the current battle between the people of Southern Nigeria and the aggressive herdsmen, I employed Late Arrival Superior Aggression theory, LASAT; a budding theory of Diaspora relations developed by the University of Ibadan School of Diaspora Studies. The proponent who heads the Diaspora and Transnational studies unit, Dr Senayon Olaoluwa, observes, through history, the persistent clash between late arrivals and early arrivals and how the late arrivals have always thrived through the deployment of superior agency and aggression. For clarity, a few examples will suffice. While God created humans last (late arrival), he dominates animals, plants and cultivates the land (early arrivals). As humans, we kill animals and use plants for whatever we want. We capture lion, a ranking king of the jungle and housed it in zoological garden making money from it to show our superiority. Our domination shows in names like ‘Super Eagles of Nigeria’, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The late Chinua Achebe was called ‘eagle on the Iroko’ to mention but a few.
Like the ‘aggressive’ herdsmen, we all leave home for work in search of that which we desire but lack. At the earth of the quest for power is what Senayon calls the ‘intermediate agency of desire and envy’. For the herdsmen, I see a desire ‘to be’ in the position of early arrivals (the Southerners) and desire to ‘have’ or possess the privilege resources (land, space, power) in the hands of early arrivals (farmers and Southern Nigeria). Crossing from the Northern region in search of green grass, the dispersal takes subtle strategies of kinsmen who take job as domestic staff, security and trade in neighbourhoods across Southern Nigerian. The danger of a late arrival superior aggression can be seen in reported cases of domestic staff who kidnapped or killed their bosses in a desire ‘to be’ or ‘to have’ as theirs the privileges of their bosses. In the political arena, the take-over of power by the late arrival, All Progressives Congress, APC, from the early arrival Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 unpacks the theoretical agency of LASAT in explaining varying human desires across sectors.
