Politicians, Nigeria’s biggest problem — Anglican Bishop by Abraham662(m) : 6:00 pm On Jul 22, 2019

THE Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, has said Nigeria’s problems are the politicians while stressing the need to revisit the 2014 National Conference before talking about a fresh one.
Nigeria has failed’
According to the Bishop who spoke in Nnewi, the last conference with the rich recommendations would serve as a stepping stone to how far Nigeria will go as a country.
Bishop Ikeakor said having another National Conference “is good, but what happened to the one already held and is being sat on, in spite of calls by Nigerians for its recommendations to be implemented.
“We will rather call for restructuring Nigeria instead of another National or Constitutional Conference. That is not even where the main problem of Nigeria or the solution lies.
“The greatest problem of Nigerian is its political office holders; they are greedy and selfish. You hardly see any patriotic one. What have they done in the face of the insecurity in the country, if the President is not doing anything?
“What has the lawmakers done to address the security and other problems in Nigeria? They cannot talk because they have one or more interests to protect or one case or the other to answer and, therefore, have become blind to the impunity in the country.

Boko Haram: Security has improved in Lake Chad region MNJTF by Abraham662(m) : 12:56 am On Jul 23, 2019

The security situation within the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJNTF) Area of Responsibility in the Lake Chad region has improved since the activation of OP YANCIN TAFKI on January 22, an official has said.
Boko Haram members
The force commander, C.O. Ude, also said although confrontations between the military, drawn from affected nations, and the terrorists have increased in the past four months, civilian casualties have continued to decrease, largely due to the interposition of the military force.
The major general said this during the just concluded Lake Chad governors forum in Niamey, Niger Republic. Governors from North-east Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, and their representatives attended the two-day second governor's forum at the end of which they reaffirmed their commitment to improving cross border security.
The event, organised by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), had technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
African Union (AU) and the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). The MJNTF commander, who noted that the war was far from over, however, highlighted the successes recorded against the terrorists, who have been waging pitched battles across swathes of the four nations.
It is equally worthy to mention here that the MNJTF has continued to successfully discharge its mandate as the civilian casualty figures has significantly reduced from about 1,967 recorded in 2015 to less than 570 at the end of 2018.
The few attacks by the terrorist groups against MNJTF forces have been successfully defeated by decisive counter-attacks by own forces with heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy, he said.
The offensive operations under OP YANCIN TAFKI in coordination with national operations have been directed to fixing and destroying the enemy within identified areas and camps, he explained.
The official also said the force has conducted robust fighting patrols and clearance operations to dominate the area of operations and deny the terrorists freedom of action and further degrade their will to fight.
So far, over 815 Boko Haram members have been neutralised, 55 captured and 37 Boko Haram members have so far surrendered. Similarly, several technicals, weapons, and logistics hitherto in the hands of BHT have either been destroyed or recovered in the on-going operations. These operational successes have therefore imposed significant setback on the fighting capacity of the terrorists.
It is worthy to note that these successes were as a result of well-coordinated execution of combat missions by MNJTF forces and National Troops as well as the excellent coordination of ISR and air support from the various Air Forces of TCC including our partners.
It is equally important to note that own forces have the initiative. The offensive operations counter-attacks and pursuit of the enemy have been decisive and commendable. It is hoped that with the high level of fighting efficiency of the troops, we will continue to maintain the pressure on the terrorists as we execute the crucial stages of the operation and consolidate the current gains.

Some Yoruba leaders will be first to flee if war begins – Junaid Mohammed by Abraham662(m) : 12:59 am On Jul 23, 2019

Following the continued insecurity in the country, especially with the recent killing of Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has cautioned leaders in the South West to stop fanning the embers of war with their utterances. Dr. Mohammed specifically said if there was war in the country today, the Yoruba leaders would be the first to run away.

He gave the statement in an interview with Independent Newspaper.
Recall that many Yoruba leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the Aare Onakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, have criticised the spate of insecurity in the country.
The Ooni had warned that the South West zone would defend itself from marauding herdsmen if the security situation in the region was not tamed.
But Dr. Junaid Mohammed said the Yoruba leaders have not learnt any lesson from the Biafran war experience.
He said some of the Yoruba leaders are “noisemakers” who are calling for war but will be the first to flee the country if a war breaks out in the country.
According to him, “We have to be very careful and mind our utterances. It is easy to start a war but it is not easy to stop it,” he said.
“We all saw what happened during the Biafran war even though a lot of people who went through that experience have not learnt anything like some of the leaders of Afenifere. They have been making provocative statements in recent times.
“People’s lives are determined partly by their culture. These people are noisemakers and if there is war today, they will run away because most of them have houses outside the country. They make big, big noise but some of the real fighters who will fight until death don’t even talk about it.
“We shouldn’t allow these lousy people to lead us to war. War is not good. I want Nigerians to be careful because if the chips are down, these people will not be available to fight. They are calling for war, let the war start and we will see who will run first.”

Continuous Killings In Oworonshoki, Lagos by Abraham662(m) : 8:35 pm On Jul 23, 2019

Oworonshoki Community is fast becoming the bedrock of all notorious activities ranging from, robbery, and hoodlums/cult clashes. The most dangerous of it is the killing extortion of innocent citizens by the members of the Oworonshoki Police Division.
On Sunday, four people were killed as a result of the clash between two cult group. Yesterday two people were killed. A popular hair stylist was among the two killed yesterday in broad day light without the presence of the police. As at 7pm yesterday the whole Oworonshoki has turned to a ghost city with the fear of the people returning homes.
The previous peace talk failed to be implemented and this have led to serious clash between the two groups. They engaged themselves, shooting sporadically, brandishing cutlasses and other weapons. The clash led to mass looting of shops and valuables of passersby such as phones, cash, and jewelries, among others.
Instead of going after the perpetrators, Oworonshoki Police Division resorted to raiding innocent citizens a few hours after, and a sum of N10,000 was collected from each person before they were released. It should be known to the general public that this has been the normal routine of arresting innocent citizens for the past months, while no single culprit has been arrested.
It is believed that if the appropriate authority does not address this situation urgently, Oworonshoki may completely drift into a state of anarchy because hoodlums are becoming more powerful than security operatives.

US Imposes Visa Ban On Nigerians Who Fuelled Violence During Elections by Abraham662(m) : 5:18 pm On Jul 24, 2019

The US government has announced visa restriction on Nigerians who “sabotaged” the country’s democracy.
This was made known in a statement signed by Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson of the US department of state.
“The United States is a steadfast supporter of Nigerian democracy. We commend all those Nigerians who participated peacefully in the February and March 2019 elections and have worked to strengthen Nigerian democratic institutions and processes,” the statement read.
“As Nigeria marks the twentieth anniversary of a return to democratic rule this year, we remain committed to working together to continue to advance democracy and respect for human rights and achieve greater peace and prosperity for both our nations. We condemn those whose acts of violence, intimidation, or corruption harmed Nigerians or undermined the democratic process.
“In a January 24 statement, the U.S. government said that we would consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organising election-related violence. To that end, the Secretary of State is imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria. These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights.”
The department of state also emphasised that the actions announced are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly elected government.
The names of the affected persons were not disclosed.

FFK Drags South-West Governors On Response To Northern Elders Advice To Herdsmen by Abraham662(m) : 5:24 pm On Jul 24, 2019

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has fired back at the South-West governors over their response to call by the Chairman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Prof. Ango Abdullahi, for Fulani herdsmen to return home if Southerners are hostile to them, Igbere TV reports.
Prof. Ango Abdullahi, had on Tuesday claimed to have received report of violence in some sections of the country against the herdsmen, Igbere TV reports.
“We have heard in the few hours ago that some violence had already started to manifest in some sections of the country against the herdsmen.
“If it is indeed true that their safety is not guaranteed in the places where they are residing, we would rather have them back into areas where their safety is guaranteed, and they should be coming back as much as possible to the North" he said.
Reacting to the comment credited to the Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, the South-West governors' in its statement said it was a 'palpable trepidation and outrage, and a sustained attempts to fan the ember of discord'.
However Femi Fani-Kayode was not pleased with the counter-statement and he described it as 'weak, cowardly, meaningless and nonsensical'. The former Aviation Minister tweeted;
The SW Governors response to the call for the Fulani terrorists to leave the SW was weak, cowardly, meaningless and nonsensical. They could not even muster the courage to talk until after Buhari had spoken. Someone pl ask them: are u with the Yoruba people or with Fulani Buhari?”

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian troops and police clashed on Tuesday with Shi'ite Muslim protesters in the capital Abuja and gunfire could be heard, according to a Reuters witness.
The air was thick with teargas as soldiers and police officers made arrests. The Shi'ite group marched in protest against the continued detention of its leader, despite a court ruling that he be released.
The violence happened a day after at least three people - including a journalist and senior policeman - were killed in a similar confrontation in the administrative heart of Abuja. As many as 10 more people may have died in the violence, a spokesman for the Shi'ites said that day.
A Reuters reporter witnessed the funeral in Nigeria's northern state of Niger for six of those the group said were killed during Monday's protest. A man whose child was killed during the protest said his son has become a martyr.
"The only thing that will stop this protest is for the government to ... free our leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky," said Abdullahi Musa.
"We are not armed. If we were armed, these people cannot face us. It's because they see we are unarmed that is why they are killing us, shooting us and this will never deter us from what we are doing," he said.
President Muhammadu Buhari, a Sunni like the vast majority of Nigeria's Muslim community, warned in a statement before Tuesday's protest: "Let nobody or group doubt or test our will to act in the higher interest of the majority of our citizens."
"Perpetrators of the mayhem will not go unpunished (and) no government can tolerate unceasing affront to constituted authority," he added.
Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) members regularly take to the streets of Abuja to call for the release of Zakzaky, who has been in detention since 2015. They say Zakzaky requires medical help. Live ammunition and teargas have been used by security forces in recent weeks.
Clashes between police and Zakzaky's backers have raised fears that the IMN might turn to violent insurgency as did Sunni Islamist group Boko Haram after police killed their leader in 2009.
