BBC reporter and family left homeless again after Israel air strike warning by atoluwash(m) : 4:59 am On Oct 18, 2023

It was just shy of 3 p.m. on a Tuesday in Gaza. I was gearing up for my live appearance on BBC TV News when I received a call from my wife, who was nearly in tears, with the sound of our children crying in the background.

They had been instructed to evacuate the apartment we had been residing in due to a warning that the Israeli Air Force was going to target a nearby location.

I urged her to quickly gather the children and leave. I reached out to my colleague Mahmoud, who was close by and asked for his assistance.

For the second time in just five days, my family found themselves on the run, fleeing from the threat of airstrikes.

Last Friday, we packed up our home in Gaza City, following the Israeli authorities' directive for residents in northern Gaza to relocate to the south for their safety.

We relocated alongside my father-in-law, my wife's sister, and their respective families. Just like thousands of other families, we embarked on a journey to the city of Khan Younis. We spent countless hours searching for any available place to stay.

It was far from simple. The city, already home to 400,000 people, was inundated as it struggled to accommodate over a million additional people.

Finally, we managed to find a house where the owners agreed to let us share the space with another family. We thought the Al Amal neighborhood appeared bustling, with a bakery and a pharmacy, and we hoped that the high number of residents would provide safety.
Together with the other families in the building, we helped each other find water and food.

But then the owner of the building said he had received a phone call. The caller identified themselves as an Israeli soldier, checked the owner's name, and said the building should be evacuated because the building next door (only a meter away) was going to be destroyed.

We all left straight away and got to a safe distance leaving many of our possessions. It was impossible to know when Israel would bomb, in five minutes or the next day.

I told the family to go to the Red Cross (ICRC) hospital, about 700 meters away, just to be sure.

So now we are homeless again. I've knocked on the door of a house near the hospital and have asked the family inside to look after my wife and children for a few hours, so I can work out what to do next.

Honestly, I don't know what to do - it is hard to be a reporter and try to look after my family like this. I struggle to find food and water for them. We now don't have a home.

I've covered the previous wars in Gaza but this is the first time my family has been so affected.

I can cope when I'm in danger but when your family is too, you feel guilty.
