Deadly clashes resume in Palestinian camp in Lebanon by atoluwash(m) : 3:41 am On Sep 12, 2023

Intense clashes between factions in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon have resulted in the reported deaths of at least 10 individuals over a span of five days.

This renewed violence erupted between the Fatah movement, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, and Islamist groups, following a relatively calm period of four weeks.

The hostilities prompted numerous families to flee Ein el-Hilweh, located near the city of Sidon, which happens to be the largest such camp in Lebanon.

Within this camp, nearly 55,000 registered Palestinian refugees, along with thousands who have sought refuge from the neighboring Syrian civil war, reside.

It is noteworthy that Lebanese security forces do not have jurisdiction over this area, placing the responsibility for its security squarely on the Palestinian factions within the camp. Unfortunately, conflicts and disputes among these factions are not uncommon.

The United Nations' Palestinian refugee agency, Unrwa, has indicated that the current escalation is linked to previous clashes between rival groups that occurred in March.

While a period of calm was restored with the intervention of the Lebanese government, violence resurfaced on July 30th, following the killing of a member of an Islamist group and an ambush resulting in the death of a Fatah military leader and four of his bodyguards.

A ceasefire was eventually brokered on August 3rd, but tensions remained high in the camp.

Regrettably, the fighting flared up again on a Thursday night, involving the use of heavy weaponry, including machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Furthermore, these clashes had a broader impact on the surrounding area compared to the previous round of violence. Unrwa reported these developments on a Sunday afternoon.

Significant damage to property and infrastructure inside the camp had been observed, while stray bullets and artillery shells had also damaged property in neighboring areas, it added.

Palestinian sources in the camp told Reuters news agency on Monday afternoon that a total of 10 people had been killed, including six Fatah fighters and two Islamists.

The other two were civilians, according to the Palestinian sources. One of them was reportedly killed outside the camp by a stray bullet.

Lebanese newspaper L'Orient Today meanwhile cited a Palestinian Red Crescent official and a Palestinian security source as putting the death toll at 11.

The Lebanese army said five Lebanese soldiers were also wounded, one of them seriously, when shells hit two bases on the outskirts of the camp on Sunday.

It warned "the relevant parties inside the camp" that it would "take appropriate measures" if its bases were endangered again.

May God's kingdom come soon so that all the clashes around the world can end once and for all.
