Re: President Trump and 3M reaches deal to allow N95 face masks to be exported by Chibuzo22(m) : 2:00 am On Apr 08, 2020

atoluwash:

Trump administration has agreed a deal with the US manufacturer 3M to import more than 166 million respirators from China over the next three months and allow 3M to continue exporting its US-made respirators.

The agreement breaks a deadlock which resulted in Washington stoppingnearly three million of the specialized masks from being exported to Ontario, stirring fears that Canada’s most populous province would run out of supplies for medical staff battling coronavirus by the end of the week.

Donald Trump, who had lambasted 3M over the weekend, had warm words for the company on Tuesday, following the agreement, and its chairman and CEO, Mike Roman offered praise for the president.

“I want to thank President Trump and the administration for their leadership and collaboration,” Roman said in a written statement. “These imports will supplement the 35 million N95 respirators we currently produce per month in the United States.”

Under the plan, 3M will import 166.5 million respirators (masks which form a seal over the mouth and nose and offer much greater protection than surgical masks) from its factories in China, over the coming three months.

Meanwhile, the 3M statement said: “The plan will also enable 3M to continue sending US produced respirators to Canada and Latin America, where 3M is the primary source of supply.”

The clash with 3M and Canada began on Thursday when Donald Trump invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act giving the government “any or all authority” to stop 3M exporting N95 respirators to Canada and Latin America.

The masks, which filter out 95% of airborne particles, are seen as a critical tool for frontline healthcare workers in the fight against Covid-19.

But as supply shrinks, countries and local governments are locked in a desperate battle to access whatever equipment is available.

At a press conference on Monday, Ontario premier Doug Ford said the 500,000 masks had been cleared for release, but nearly three million masks were intercepted by US officials at 3M’s South Dakota Facility.

“We know that the US isn’t allowing supplies across the US border,” Ford said. “The hard truth is, our supplies in Ontario are getting very low and the more new cases we get, the more demand there is on our resources.”

3M initially resisted the president’s executive order, warning in a statement the move would have “significant humanitarian implications” for countries desperate for safety equipment.

Over the weekend, Trump harshly criticised the company, warning it would have “a big price to pay”.

“We need the masks. We don’t want other people getting it,” Trump said in a Saturday briefing to reporters. “That’s why we’re instituting [the] defence production act. You could call it retaliation because that’s what it is: it’s a retaliation. If people don’t give us what we need for our people, we’re going to be very tough.”

As Ontario scrambles to source new equipment, Ford said the province is “desperately” counting on orders placed through the federal government’s bulk purchasing program to bridge its short-term needs until a sustainable supply can be found.

The order from Trump threatened to do serious damage to the close relationship between the two countries.

Speaking at his daily press briefing on Monday, Justin Trudeau said his government wouldn’t implement retaliatory measures, instead relying on diplomacy to end the impasse.

“There are very productive conversations ongoing and we expect those shipments to be delivered,” said the prime minister.

Trudeau said foreign minister François-Philippe Champagne had spoken earlierwith US secretary of state Mike Pompeo – but declined to provide additional details about the halted shipment.

A US readout from the call said Pompeo “reiterated the United States’ desire to work with Canada” to ensure Canada had access to critical equipment while also hard-hit areas in the US from having a supply of equipment.

But Trudeau also cautioned Canada’s relationship with the United States is a “two way street” – a reference to the hundreds of healthcare workers in southern Ontario that cross into Michigan each day.

In addition to front line workers, Canada also supplies American companies with the primary materials needed to construct the specialized equipment, including a medical-grade fabric at a pulp mill in British Columbia. The mill, Harmac Pacific, said it had no plans to halt exports to the United States.

Despite the prime minister’s promise of a resolution with his American counterparts, provincial leaders are already looking to the future.

Quebec-based AMD Medicom Inc recently signed a deal to manufacture as many as 50 million surgical and N95 masks for the federal government, according to the Globe and Mail. And in Ontario, premier Ford said he was working with federal officials to expedite the approvals process for a new N96 mask developed by within the province.

“Never again in the history of Canada should we ever be beholden to countries around the world or companies around the world for the safety and well-being for the people of Canada,” Ford said Friday. ”I’m not going to rely on President Trump, I’m not going to rely on any prime minister or president from any country ever again.”

Jennifer, 50, who has not confirmed a wedding date yet, admitted that their wedding plans were pretty much in limbo due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

When asked if the wedding was due scheduled imminently, the actress coyly replied to the host. ‘Any day now?!’ Jenniffer added that the prevailing circumstances did affect it a little bit.

She continued: “so we will see what happens now. Honestly, I really don’t know what’s going to happen now, as far as dates or anything like that.’ ‘We’re just kind of in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. It’s something that we’ll have to wait and see in a few months, how this all pans out.”

Re: I fought COVID-19 with carrots, black seed oil,honey,vitamin C – Seyi Makinde by Chibuzo22(m) : 2:06 am On Apr 08, 2020

atoluwash:

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has revealed that he took carrots, black seed oil, honey and vitamin C as he battled the Coronavirus disease during his isolation period.

The governor on March 30, announced he had tested positive for the virus and was going into Isolation. On Sunday April 5, he took to his Twitter handle to announce he has now tested negative for the Coronavirus disease and would be returning to work.

In an interview with Fresh FM Ibadan on Monday April 6, Makinde said in boosting his immunity to fight coronavirus, he consumed vitamin C, carrots and black seed oil mixed with honey.

“My very good friend and brother, Dr Muyideen Olatunji is the one in charge of the primary healthcare for Oyo State. He came to me and said, look, I am going to send to you this black seed oil, it boosts immunity. So, I mixed it with honey and took one teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening.

So, there are local solutions to boost immunity. Our people should not fret. Just as I’ve been able to get the virus out off my system, so will it be for majority of our people. I’ve lost a little bit of weight which I think is good. When you’re in isolation, the tendency is just to watch television and eat, I was eating amala. But I was also using the treadmill. It has also been a period to reflect and look at the programmes, policies and the things we want to do for the people of Oyo state and also reflect on how the COVID-19 is going to affect us socially and economically.” he said

That's a great news.

Re: HIV drug which successfully treats coronavirus is moving to phase 2 trials by Chibuzo22(m) : 2:07 am On Apr 08, 2020

jadoo51:

An experimental HIV drug that has been used to successfully treat COVID-19 patients is in its second phase of testing with the Food and Drug Administration and could potentially be approved for use in four weeks, its manufacturer says.

Leronlimab, made by the biotech company CytoDyn, was used to treat a handful of severely ill patients in New York City hospitals; a couple were able to be removed from their ventilators.

"I think the FDA will be willing to work with us," CytoDyn CEO Nader Pourhassan told The Post.

"I am hoping it will be expedited … I don’t see how the FDA couldn’t approve it."

Pourhassan added: "With a study in China indicating the mortality rate among COVID-19 patients requiring mechanical ventilators at more than 85 percent, the world desperately needs a therapy that can help this patient population.

Initial studies suggest leronlimab can reduce the overactive immune response, known as a cytokine storm, that can be triggered by the coronavirus infection. Cytokine storms can result in pneumonia and even death.

"[I] cried for about five minutes. It was very, very emotional," Pourhassan told Seattle’s KIRO 7 News after first learning of the results. "We’re hoping we can save millions of lives."

atoluwash:

Daddy Freeze has taken a dig at the founder of Loveworld Ministries a.k.a Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome over his recent comment of the federal government having a secret plan for 5G.

Recall that Pastor Chris had alleged that the Federal government placed a lockdown in Lagos and Abuja to install the controversial 5G network. He said this while preaching in his church on Sunday April 5. He opined that what has killed so many people in Wuhan, China is not Coronavirus as has been reported but rather it is the 5G network installed there. He challenged anyone with a different opinion to come forward.

Daddy Freeze who reacted to Pastor Chris' comment, stated that it is rooted deeply in illusory correlation, attitude polarization and belief perseverance. He added that Christ Embassy founder's recent teachings is dangerous.

He said;

“I am disappointed in Chris Oyakhilome. How can the Federal Government has secret 5G plan? What on earth is this? How can he get away with saying such things? The deaths in Wuhan were caused by 5G not Corona virus? Like WTF?

“According to him, the federal government needed to lockdown Lagos and Abuja to install 5G? Really? Like the government needs anyone’s approval to install anything.

“As far as I’m concerned, this is rooted deeply in illusory correlation, attitude polarization and belief perseverance, making teachings like these dangerous.

“How I wish I can ‘unhear’ this, I can’t believe I just wasted a part of the few daylight hours at my disposal listening to such."

Five persons were allegedly killed during a clash between youths and police officers enforcing the stay-at-home order due to the Coronavirus pandemic in Kaduna state.

The clash reportedly took place at Trikania in Sabogeri Nasarawa under Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Monday April 6.

According to SaharaReporters, traders converged at a temporary market located at Trikania following the closure of Monday market as a result of the lockdown order. It was gathered that the Civilian Joint Task Force made attempts to disperse the traders but the move was resisted by youths in the area, who were said to have overpowered the task force.

According to the report, armed policemen from Kakuri Divisional police station were drafted to the scene. The police were said to have allegedly opened fire on the angry mob upon arrival in an attempt to disperse them, leading to the death of five persons.

Meanwhile the state government has threatened to review the ongoing lockdown order in the state by closing the two-day window it provided for residents to re-stock food supplies, if the people continue flouting the Quarantine Law. The Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe who handed down this warning on Monday, also said that Government has ordered security agents to deal decisively with violators henceforth.

It will be recalled that the State Government had reviewed the 24 hour lockdown last Wednesday, by giving a two-day window of Tuesday and Wednesday every week, to enable residents buy food and other essential commodities. The Deputy Governor noted that the restriction of movement has been serially violated and threatened to revert to the 24 hour lockdown.
