No fewer than 160 children were rescued from a "baby factory" and two unregistered orphanages in Lagos, an official has said.

Some of the infants and children were mistreated, Agboola Dabiri added. It is not unusual for Nigerian police to raid "baby factories".

Sometimes, unmarried pregnant ladies are promised healthcare basically for their children to be taken away as some women were r*ped and made pregnant.

The infants could be sold for adoption, utilized for child labour, trafficked to Europe for prostitution or killed for ritual functions.

Lagos authorities few months ago told local media they'd uncovered a case in which a pregnant woman went into a private home to have her baby delivered only for the baby to be removed and sold.

Speaking after the most recent raids, Mr Dabiri, the Commissioner for Youths and Social Development at Lagos State, said 100 girls and 62 boys were rescued.

"The children and teenagers rescued from the 'baby factory' and homes were put at government-approved homes for protection and care," he added.
