India votes in world's biggest election by ayodeji11(m) : 6:31 pm On Apr 19 |
Tens of millions of Indian citizens participated in the initial phase of a staggered general election, which concludes on June 1st. Nearly one billion individuals are eligible to vote in this seven-stage election for the 543-seat lower house of parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, representing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is pursuing a third consecutive term. Several significant opposition parties, including the Congress, have forged alliances across many states to challenge the BJP. Election results are slated for announcement on June 4th. Key issues at stake encompass a job shortage, escalating prices, restrictions on dissent and opposition, and the intertwining of politics with religion. On Friday, over 160 million voters across 21 states had the opportunity to cast their ballots for more than 1,600 contenders vying for 102 seats. Tamil Nadu, located in southern India, with its 39 seats, emerged as a pivotal battleground state where the BJP, led by Mr. Modi, is striving to gain ground. The next round of voting will take place on 26 April. |
