The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that over 60 migrants are presumed to have drowned in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya.

According to the UN agency, survivors indicated that the vessel, carrying around 86 people, departed from the city of Zuwara. The boat was overwhelmed by high waves, leading to the loss of 61 migrants, including children, who are now missing and presumed dead.

Libya serves as one of the primary departure points for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in their quest to reach Europe.

The IOM has estimated that this year alone, over 2,200 people have lost their lives during such crossings, marking it as one of the most perilous migration routes globally.

The victims in this recent incident were predominantly from Nigeria, Gambia, and other African countries, as reported by the AFP news agency.

The IOM disclosed that 25 survivors have been transferred to a Libyan detention center, where they are receiving medical assistance.

A spokesperson from the IOM, writing on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized the alarming death toll for the year, underscoring the inadequacy of efforts to save lives at sea.

The tragedy reflects the ongoing dangers faced by migrants seeking a better life, with many attempting the perilous journey to Italy and other European countries.

The Mediterranean crossings often involve overcrowded boats ill-equipped for the safety of those on board, with individuals fleeing conflicts, persecution, or in search of better economic opportunities.

More than 153,000 migrants have arrived in Italy this year from Tunisia and Libya, according to the UN's refugee agency.
