The sentencing for Deja Taylor, the mother of a six-year-old boy who shot his teacher in Virginia, has been finalized at two years in prison as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

The potential sentence, originally over five years, was reduced after Taylor was charged with child neglect in connection with the incident.

In January, her son took a gun from her purse and shot his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, who survived but sustained serious injuries, requiring extensive hospitalization and multiple surgeries. Taylor's son revealed to school staff that he had accessed his mother's gun.

Despite Taylor initially stating that she had secured the weapon with a trigger lock, none was found by the police. While a six-month sentence was proposed under the plea agreement, the judge opted for the longer term during the hearing.

Taylor's lawyer, James Ellenson, expressed disagreement with the sentence, deeming it excessive.

Despite his disagreement, he indicated that an appeal was unlikely due to the extended duration it would take for a higher court to reconsider, surpassing the time Taylor is expected to serve on the child neglect charge.

In a previous interview with ABC, Taylor acknowledged her responsibility for the incident and apologized to Zwerner. The boy involved has not faced charges and reportedly now attends a different school.

Ms Zwerner, meanwhile, is suing the Newport News school district for $40m (£31.4m), alleging that administrators ignored several warnings that the boy had a gun.
