Medical officials in Los Angeles have confirmed that the death of actor Matthew Perry was an accidental result of the "acute effects of ketamine."

Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing in the sitcom Friends, was discovered unresponsive in the pool of his Los Angeles home in October. Initially inconclusive, the post-mortem examination later indicated drowning as a contributing factor.

Famous for his portrayal of Chandler in the popular Friends series that aired from 1994 to 2004, Perry faced public struggles with addiction to painkillers and alcohol during the peak of his fame.

Despite undergoing rehabilitation on multiple occasions, he revealed in a 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2 that he could not recall three years of filming due to issues with substance abuse.

The 54-year-old actor, who had been predominantly sober since 2001 with occasional setbacks, experienced other contributing factors to his death, including coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication used for treating opioid use disorder, as stated by the LA County medical examiner.

The high levels of ketamine in his post-mortem blood specimens were identified as the primary causes of cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression, with drowning also contributing due to the likelihood of submersion in the pool as he became unconscious.

Perry was found unresponsive on October 28, and paramedics pronounced his death upon arrival. The medical examiner's office later updated its file the following day, indicating that the post-mortem was complete but required additional details.

His fellow Friends actors paid tribute to Perry in the weeks following his death, with actress Jennifer Anniston - who played Rachel in the sitcom - writing that "having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I've never experienced before".

David Schwimmer, who played Ross, thanked Perry "for 10 incredible years of laughter and creativity".

He was laid to rest at an LA cemetery following a private funeral, US media reported in November.

Films he starred in included crime caper The Whole Nine Yards and sequel The Whole Ten Yards with his friend Bruce Willis. He played the lead in romantic comedy Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek, and he played the older Zac Efron in 17 Again.

In 2016, he also wrote a play called The End of Longing - which the Times noted "explores his characters' search for love and commitment and the damage that can be wrought when those things continue to be absent from life".
