Turkey has issued an international arrest warrant for the son of Somalia's president following allegations that he fatally struck a motorcycle courier in Istanbul.

According to a police report, Mohammed Hassan Cheikh Mohamud was involved in a collision with the courier during daylight hours.

It is reported that he was driving a car registered to the Somali consulate in Istanbul. Despite a travel ban imposed on Mohamud, authorities suspect that he has already left the country.

Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, shared surveillance footage of the incident on social media, depicting a car apparently colliding with a motorcycle at a busy junction.

The motorcyclist, Yunus Emre Göçer, a father of two, succumbed to his injuries six days later.

Initially, a police report had attributed fault to Göçer, leading to Mohamud's release; however, a subsequent review of security footage suggested an alternative explanation.

Mr Mohamud, who is the son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has not commented.

An international arrest warrant for Mr Mohamud was issued by the Turkish prosecutor on Friday.

This was after police had visited his home to find that he had not been there for almost a week, the AFP news agency says, citing local reports.

Turkey and Somalia have enjoyed growing diplomatic relations over the past decade, with Turkey providing infrastructure investment, military training and humanitarian aid.
