A fatal incident occurred in central Paris where a man lost his life, and two others sustained injuries in an assault. France's Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, stated that the assailant had targeted tourists near the Quai de Grenelle, near the Eiffel Tower.

He revealed that a 26-year-old French national, previously known to security services, had been apprehended.

According to a police source reported by AFP news agency, the victim who succumbed to the attack was identified as a German national and had been stabbed. The injured individuals received medical attention from emergency services.

Minister Darmanin mentioned that the alleged assailant had exclaimed "Allahu Akbar," which translates to "God is greatest" in Arabic, and informed the police that he was distressed about the situation in Gaza.

He further disclosed that the suspect had previously been sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for planning another attack and was under surveillance by French security services.

The man was also known to have suffered psychiatric disorders, Mr Darmanin said.

A police operation is ongoing around the Bir-Hakeim metro station, and authorities have urged people to avoid the area.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office said it had taken charge of the investigation.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said her thoughts were with those affected by the attack and thanked the emergency services for their response.

"We will not give in to terrorism. Never," she said.
