Stand-up comedian, Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has bemoaned the fact that stand-up comedy in Nigeria “is dying.”

He pointed out that the Nigeria comedy industry lacks “structure and platform,” in contrast to the music and movie industry.

He made these remarks in a recent Arise TV interview.

“You know, with music, they have their streaming service, a platform that backs their global endeavors. The streaming platform is what they have in common with movies, Afrobeats then invaded that area, creating room for the movies. We regrettably don’t have any platform for humor. We don’t have structure or comedy club.”

“Comedy artist in the United States try out the material several times before embarking on a tour by performing at comedy clubs around the country. However, there are no clubs in Nigeria.” Basketmouth remarked.

Stand-up comedy needs innovation in Nigeria.
