Academic activities in secondary schools spread across Taraba State have been brought to a standstill by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS.

The action is in protest against the recent gruesome killing of their colleague by some suspected students.

Making the announcement on Friday, the leadership of the association, led by its secretary, Dr. Kazon Ishaku, said the action became necessary to guide against future occurrence.

The association, which was of the view that an injury to one is an injury to all, said they have directed their colleagues in secondary schools spread nooks and crannies of the state to immediately suspend academic activities.

Expressing their sadness over the sudden termination of the life of their colleague, they said “we don’t have a better way of expressing our pains rather than telling our members to suspend academics in all the schools across our dear state.”

Calling on the security agencies to be proactive in stemming these acts, they said the government needs to strengthen security around schools and aggressively implement the safe school global initiative.

“We did not just decide to close down secondary schools across the state. But we are pained with the brutal killing of our colleague.

The better way to express our pains to the government, parents and stakeholders is to tell our members to suspend academic activities across the state.”

”Our work as teachers poses no threat to any community or anybody, the state government needs to start planning how to deploy SECU operatives to schools.

Visits to secondary schools spread across the Jalingo metropolis by our reporter indicated that all is indeed not well with the schools as students were all turned back home.

The directive was also observed to have been fully complied with by the teachers as most of those who spoke with our reporter vowed not to resume academic activities pending when the leadership of the union deemed it fit to lift the ban on the suspension of academic activities.
