Climate shocks, conflict and rising costs have left 76% of South Sudan’s population in need of humanitarian assistance. Record flooding and the crisis in neighbouring Sudan have made vulnerable communities even more food insecure.

One struggle is a lack of access to cooking fuel as firewood is scarce and charcoal is expensive. Another issue smallholder farmers in South Sudan face is post-harvest loss — over 40% of food produced is wasted because it's not stored properly.

The World Food Programme is on the ground assisting people in South Sudan with innovative solutions to fighting hunger. One method is sustainable fuel for cooking made from water hyacinth, a local plant. Programmes are also introducing hermetic bags which help farmers store their produce so it stays fresh and keeps out pests. Innovation ensures long-term food security for people in South Sudan.
