A train traveling at high speed collided with railway workers near a station in Italy, resulting in the unfortunate death of at least five individuals. These workers, ranging in age from 22 to 52, were engaged in track replacement activities outside the northern city of Turin when the accident occurred.

The incident took place on the railway line connecting Turin and Milan, precisely as the empty passenger train passed through Brandizzo station at a speed of around 160 km/h (100 mph). The Mayor, Paolo Bodoni, informed the Italian media that an investigation into the matter is currently underway.

Among the workers, two managed to escape unharmed, although they were taken to a hospital for precautionary observation. The train operator received treatment on-site for shock but was later allowed to return home. Authorities plan to question him at a later time regarding the incident.

In an official statement, the Italian railway network (RFI) expressed profound sadness for the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased workers.

Mr. Bodoni described the incident as "chilling" and a "huge tragedy".

Italian reports said the workers had been replacing about 10m of track when the empty train transporting a dozen wagons went through Brandizzo station at high speed.

Some of the victims were dragged hundreds of metres along the track.

The mayor of Brandizzo, a small town to the north-east of Turin, said he would wait until the outcome of the inquiry but a communication error could not be ruled out.
