Workers at major Australia gas plants to strike by atoluwash(m) : 3:12 am On Aug 29, 2023 |
Employees at two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia, which are under the management of the American energy corporation Chevron, are preparing to commence a strike starting on September 7. This action has the potential to impact global prices in the energy sector. Chevron has communicated to the BBC that it is committed to upholding safe and dependable operations even if disruptions occur at its facilities. These two sites, Wheatstone and Gorgon, are responsible for over 5% of the global LNG production. Recent concerns regarding strikes have led to an increase in wholesale gas prices in Europe. "While we don't believe that industrial action is necessary for the agreement to be reached, we recognize employees have the right to take protected industrial action," Chevron said in a statement on Tuesday. The statement also mentioned its commitment to persist in navigating the negotiation process, striving for solutions that align with the welfare of both staff and the organization. Over the past week, wholesale gas prices in Europe surged due to apprehensions about supply disruption at Chevron and another Australian LNG facility managed by Woodside Energy. On Thursday, Woodside reported reaching a preliminary agreement with unions representing employees at its North West Shelf facility. Together with the Woodside and Chevron plants make up around 10% of the world's supply of LNG. |
