A single individual lost their life, and 46 individuals sustained injuries as a result of twin explosions at a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) station in Romania.

Among the injured are 26 firefighters who swiftly responded to the initial explosion near the city of Bucharest on Saturday evening.

Subsequently, a second explosion generated a mushroom cloud that towered above the scene, unsettling the surroundings in Crevedia.

Authorities disclosed that at least eight of the wounded suffered severe burns, with plans to transfer four of them to hospitals overseas. Evacuations have been carried out for people within a radius of 700 meters (nearly half a mile) from the site.

"The area is still dangerous... there is a risk of another explosion at another tanker," said Raed Arafat, head of Romania's emergency department, quoted by the AFP news agency.

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis described the explosions as a "tragedy" and said he was "profoundly saddened" by what had happened.

"An investigation must quickly be launched to see if rules were broken. I ask the authorities to take urgent measures for the injured so that these tragedies won't happen again," he wrote on Facebook.
