Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft crashes into Moon by atoluwash(m) : 4:52 am On Aug 21, 2023 |
Russia's unmanned spacecraft, Luna-25, has crashed into the Moon after losing control during its mission, according to officials. This mission marked Russia's return to lunar exploration after almost five decades. Although Luna-25 aimed to be the first to land on the Moon's south pole, it encountered issues while transitioning into its pre-landing orbit, resulting in its failure. The spacecraft was intended to explore an area suspected to contain frozen water and valuable elements. Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, reported that contact was lost on Saturday shortly after 14:57 pm (11:57 GMT), and initial assessments indicated that the 800kg lander had collided with the Moon's surface, prompting further investigation into the mission's failure. This setback comes as Russia's space program faces challenges due to a decrease in funding for civilian initiatives, prioritizing military endeavors instead. India's Chandrayaan-3, which plans to land on the Moon's south pole in the near future, is racing against Russia in this lunar exploration. The unfortunate Luna-25 incident was acknowledged by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), which commented on the risks and complexity of space missions. Roscosmos had previously acknowledged the mission's inherent risks, with the spacecraft's launch occurring on August 11 from the Vostochny Cosmodrome and its successful entry into lunar orbit just days prior to the collision. It was expected to make history by making a soft landing on Monday or Tuesday, just days before the Indian touchdown. No country has ever landed on the Moon's south pole before, although both the US and China have landed softly on the Moon's surface. Luna-25 was Russia's first Moon mission since 1976 when it was part of the Soviet Union. That mission, Luna-24, landed successfully. |
