Numerous migrants saved near the Canary Islands. by atoluwash(m) : 2:43 pm On Aug 17, 2023

Around 227 migrants were successfully rescued near Spain's Canary Islands on Thursday, following reports of more than 30 migrants tragically losing their lives the day before.

The Coast Guard, in collaboration with emergency services, conducted the rescue operation involving migrants traveling on inflatable boats near the Lanzarote and Gran Canaria islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of these individuals were transported to a hospital for treatment of a "mild condition."

On the previous day, two charitable organizations, Walking Borders and Alarm Phone, revealed that over 30 migrants may have perished when their dinghy capsized off Gran Canaria.

Spanish authorities confirmed the discovery of the bodies of a minor and an adult male, along with the successful rescue of 24 other individuals. However, the charitable organizations maintained that there had been around 60 people on board.

Helena Maleno Garzon from Walking Borders stated that 39 people, including four women and a baby, had lost their lives, whereas Alarm Phone asserted that 35 individuals remained unaccounted for. Both of these groups oversee migrant boats and receive communications from those on board or their relatives.

Remarkably, a Spanish rescue service vessel, the Guardamar Caliope, was situated just an hour's journey away from the dinghy on Tuesday evening, as reported by the Spanish news agency Efe.

However, the ship did not intervene since the operation was handed over to Moroccan authorities, who subsequently dispatched a patrol boat that arrived on Wednesday morning—approximately 10 hours after the Spanish rescue plane had initially spotted the dinghy, according to Reuters.

Angel Victor Torres, the leader of the Canary Islands region, characterized the incident as a "tragedy" and implored the European Union to establish a comprehensive migration policy that provides coordinated and supportive solutions to the ongoing migration challenges.

Despite their proximity to Africa's western coast, the Canary Islands belong to Spain, attracting migrants who seek to reach mainland Europe from Africa.

The migration route from Western Africa to the Atlantic is known as one of the world's most perilous, with the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) reporting that at least 543 migrants have either lost their lives or gone missing during this journey in 2022.

The IOM documented 45 shipwrecks on this route during the mentioned timeframe, though they acknowledge that these figures are likely underestimated due to limited and incomplete data.

Most of those making the journey are from Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, it says.

Last week, a migrant boat carrying hundreds of people sank off the Greek coast, with at least 78 known to have died, although many more are feared to have drowned.

The UN's human rights office says up to 500 people are still missing, and the BBC has obtained evidence casting doubt on the Greek coastguard's account of what happened. The coastguard claims that the boat was on a course to Italy and not in need of rescue.
