Reports from state media on Sunday stated that a "terrorist" attack occurred at a shrine in Shiraz, Iran, resulting in one fatality and eight injuries. According to the official IRNA news agency, a lone gunman tried to enter the Shah Cheragh shrine and fired shots at visitors before being subdued.

In the past, the shrine had been targeted in October in an attack claimed by Islamic State (IS), causing 13 casualties. No specific group has taken responsibility for this latest incident.

Earlier reports initially mentioned two attackers and four deaths, but this was later corrected to one attacker, one deceased, and eight wounded.

Yadollah Bouali, the regional Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commander, stated that a "terrorist" entered the shrine's gate and opened fire using a battle rifle. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that the attacker encountered "resistance" from "protection forces" while attempting to enter through the Bab al-Mahdi door. Witnesses recounted that the gunman began firing indiscriminately after being confronted.

Tasnim, another semi-official news outlet, confirmed at least seven injuries and noted the closure of nearby shops. Security forces cordoned off the shrine area, as depicted in images showing bullet holes in barred windows at the shrine's entrance.

This shrine is a significant pilgrimage site, housing the tombs of two sons of the seventh Shia Imam Musa al-Kadhim, who are also siblings to the eighth Imam Ali al-Rida.

Last month, Iran executed two people alleged to have helped carry out the October attack. The main protagonist, identified as an Afghan national in his 30s named Hamed Badakhshan, was killed at the scene of the attack.

Three other defendants were sentenced to prison for up to 25 years for their membership in IS.

IS has claimed previous attacks in Iran, including the deadly twin bombings in 2017 that targeted the country's parliament and the tomb of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
