A tragic helicopter crash occurred during a firefighting operation in California, resulting in the loss of three lives. The incident took place on Sunday evening near Cabazon, Riverside County, as fire crews responded to a blaze.

Two helicopters collided during the mission, leading to one safely landing while the other tragically crashed, claiming the lives of all those on board. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the crash.

The individuals who lost their lives include a fire captain and division chief from Cal Fire, along with a contracted pilot. Their identities have not been disclosed.

David Fulcher, southern region chief for Cal Fire, described the incident as a "tragic loss".

"We have lost three great individuals. Three fathers, three husbands, three friends, three sons," he said.

"Daughters have lost their fathers, sons have lost their fathers".

Mr. Fulcher told a press conference the fire initially broke out in a building but later spread to surrounding vegetation. It was eventually put out.

The helicopter that crashed was being used for observation, while the one that landed safely was helping to put out the fire. Both had been contracted to Cal Fire.
