Nasa has successfully reestablished full contact with its Voyager 2 probe, months ahead of the original timeline.

In July, an erroneous command caused the spacecraft, launched in 1977, to change its position and lose communication with Earth.

Thanks to an "interstellar shout" - a powerful instruction - the probe's antenna is now facing Earth once again. Mission controllers had to wait 37 hours to confirm if the interstellar command had worked due to the probe's vast distance from Earth.

Nasa used its most potent transmitter to send a message to Voyager 2 during optimal conditions, aligning the antenna with the command.

Previously, the probe was unable to receive commands or transmit data back to Nasa's Deep Space Network. Voyager 2, along with its twin Voyager 1, are the only spacecraft to venture outside the heliosphere and into interstellar space.

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft ever to fly by Neptune and Uranus, while Voyager 1 is now nearly 15 billion miles away from Earth, making it humanity's most distant spacecraft.

Once both spacecraft run out of power - expected sometime after 2025 - they will continue roaming through space.
