In a shocking and deeply disturbing case, a former Australian childcare worker has been charged with a staggering 1,600 offenses related to the sexual abuse of 91 children. This horrendous crime involved the exploitation of young girls over a horrifying 15-year period at multiple centers both in Australia and overseas.

The 45-year-old man was apprehended in August 2022, but the investigation and identification of the alleged victims took an entire year. The scale and magnitude of this case have left authorities appalled, describing it as one of the most horrific they have encountered.

The charges against him are incredibly grave, with 246 counts of rape and 673 counts of indecent assault, many of them in aggravated circumstances. The potential consequences are severe, with the most serious charges carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Furthermore, he is facing hundreds of charges for filming and distributing child abuse material, with a disturbing collection of 4,000 images and videos found on his electronic devices. This depravity occurred in 10 childcare centers in Queensland, one in New South Wales, and another in an unnamed foreign country. The Australian Federal Police has expressed confidence that the perpetrator did not offend at the other childcare centers he worked at.

The impact of this appalling crime on the community cannot be understated. It is a case that deeply distresses and shocks all those who hear about it. The authorities are committed to bringing justice to the victims and holding the perpetrator accountable for his reprehensible actions.

"It's beyond the realms of anyone's imagination, what this person did to these children. You try not to be shocked after a long period of time in the police... but this is a horrific case," she said.

The 87 Australian children who were allegedly abused - some of whom are now adults - have been identified and their families contacted.

Australian authorities are now working with their international counterparts to contact the other four alleged victims.

Investigators say they caught the man after they were able to identify the background appearing in child abuse material at one of the childcare centers he worked at.

The AFP executed a search warrant at the Brisbane center on 20 August 2022, before also searching the man's Gold Coast home and seizing electronic devices allegedly containing child abuse material he had created.

He had been reported to police in Queensland twice before, in 2021 and 2022, but investigators had found insufficient evidence to act, police say.

The man - who is yet to be named - is next due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on 21 August.
