In Awka, the capital of Anambra State, a fight between rival cult groups allegedly resulted in the deaths of two people.

It was learned that the attack took place on Friday, June 30, 2023, around 11:AM along Zik’s Avenue in Awka, close to the Ukwuoji Bus Stop.

The cultists were said to have invaded the area and started shooting into the air in a struggle for supremacy, though the motive for the attack has not yet been fully determined.

An eyewitness described how “the hoodlums, numbering about five individuals, invaded the area in a tinted glass vehicle and started shooting into the air, shooting down their victims in the process, and then escaping.”

We were all present when it occurred, and as soon as they entered the area, gunshots began to ring out. Two of their members were shot, and as everyone fled for safety, the remaining members of the cult took advantage of the situation to flee.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Command’s spokesperson, did not confirm the killing but did acknowledge that shootings had occurred nearby.

“The killing of anyone before me is the only information there is. But after hearing gunshots at the Ukwuoji Bus Stop in Awka, police officers increased patrols within the city. Eyewitness information gathered at the scene indicated that it is cult-related, according to the PPRO.
