Passengers kidnapped, many injured as gunmen attack train station in Edo by D1ANA(f) : 5:35 pm On Jan 08, 2023 |
Numerous passengers were taken hostage by gunmen at a train station in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State. They were waiting to board a train from Warri, Delta State, when they were attacked on Saturday, January 7, 2023. SP Chidi Nwabuzor (spokesperson for the command) confirmed that some passengers were shot during the attack in a statement. According to the PPRO the abductors had AK 47 and invaded the station on Saturday night. They shot sporadically into airspace before abducting many intending travelers. "This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that today, 7th of January, 2023 at about 1600hrs, men armed with AK 47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri," the statement read. "The kidnappers shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers, leaving some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men have visited the scene of crime with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters with a view to protecting the lives and property of the remaining passengers. "Bush combing operations have commenced in order to rescue the victims and arrest the fleeing kidnappers. Further developments will be communicated”, he added. This development comes less than a year after terrorists killed some train passengers in Kaduna and abducted more than 60 others. |
