Some of the top handball clubs in the nation are vying for supremacy in the 2022 National Division One Handball League, and the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin has turned into a battleground.

Confluence Kings, Bendel Dynamos, Mindscope Academy, Delta Force, and Bayelsa Queens are the current rivals in the tournament, which began yesterday.

While Confluence Kings will take against Bendel Dynamos in the men’s division of the event, which culminates on October 16, Delta Force will play Correctional Boys.

Bayelsa Queens compete in the women’s division against Mindscope Academy. In order to participate in the 2023 Prudent Energy Handball Premier League, nine teams—five men’s teams and four women’s teams—will fight for four promotion berths.

Samuel Ocheho, president of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), praised the Edo State government for agreeing to organize and fund the league as a way of working with the federation to further the growth of the sport.

“I must commend the administration of Edo State for choosing to work with us as a federation to continue the growth of handball by agreeing to host the National Division One Handball League.

“I must admit that Edo State has seen a significant increase in sports activity over the last several years as a result of the government’s conscious efforts to make the industry viable for growth.

The state government’s commitment to organizing and funding the league has helped handball, one of the sports under emphasis, expand significantly.
