On Wednesday, September 21st, a Kano Magistrate ordered Geng Quanrong a Chinese national to be remanded for the murder of Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, his Nigerian lover.

Geng murdered Ummu, 23, last Friday, September 16th, in her Kabuga Quarters home, Dorayi Babba, Kano State. After being arrested in Kano by police, he allegedly confessed. Geng, 47 years old, claimed that he murdered Ummi after she promised to marry him, but then reneged after he spent so much money.

At his arraignment this morning, the court ordered that he be remanded in Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre. The order of the court followed the arraignment of the accused person before the court by the police on the charge of culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the penal code.

However, the Magistrate, Hanif Sanusi Ciroma, held that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.

Khalifa Auwal Hashi, the prosecution counsel, appealed to Court for the return of the accused to a custodial institution, as it had no jurisdiction while the Kano State ministry was deciding.

In granting the appeal, the magistrate ruled that the accused person be remanded at the custodial facility till October 13, 2022, for arraignment before a court with jurisdiction.
