ASUU to appeal National Industrial court order asking it to call off its ongoing by jadoo51(m) : 6:24 am On Sep 22, 2022 |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has announced that it will appeal against the National Industrial Court's decision which ordered lecturers to end their strike. Femi Falana (counsel to the union), disclosed this information in an interview with Channels TV. After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the compass between the academic union and the Federal government, James Igwe, its lead counsel filed an application for an Interlocutory Injunction seeking an order from the court to stop the ASUU from further striking. Yesterday, September 21st, Justice Polycarp Hamman delivered judgment and reprimanded ASUU from any further industrial action until the case was resolved. The judge ordered that the case file be returned to the president at the Industrial Court to be assigned to another judge. He is a vacation judge. The judge stated that the strike was detrimental to students at public universities who can't afford private tertiary institutions. He said that workers are not allowed to strike if a dispute has been referred by the industrial court under the Trade Dispute Act. Justice Hamman granted the government's application, stating that it was meritorious. However, he refused to issue a fine to the government as requested by ASUU. Falana stated that the academic union would appeal the court order in response to this development. |
