An unidentified woman from Anambra State left her baby boy, one-month-old, with another passenger on a bus that ran along Zik's Avenue in Amawbia, Anambra State.

The mother gave the baby to a fellow traveler at 9 a.m. on September 6, 2022. She alighted to likely ease herself, but she never returned after three hours.

The report was confirmed by Edwin Okadigbo (Public Relations Officer, National Security, and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC), Anambra State Command), who said that the woman who abandoned the baby had also handed him over to an officer.

Okadigbo released the following statement

The baby is about one month old. After being left by his mother on a bus, he was apparently abandoned by her. A staff member of the Corps helped to rescue him. After his mother had boarded a bus to go to Amawbia Correctional Services Awka, the baby was left behind by her mother and stopped at a bus stop to get to Ziks Avenue.

After three hours of searching and waiting, the baby was finally found by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Anambra State Command. After receiving the necessary medical attention, the infant was taken to a safe place. The tracing of his unknown relatives and parents continues. The case of the child abandoned has been opened. This is being investigated.

Anyone who knows of a woman or parents who recently gave birth but is suddenly without the child, or knows relatives of the infant is urged to contact the Intelligence and Investigation Department of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command on - 08068526902 or 0902 4941882 during office hours.

Commandant Isidore Chukwudi Chikere, the Anambra State Commander of the corps has made a clarion call to members of the public to stop abandoning children amid the rising number of cases of abandoned babies and concealed births.''
