Mercy Okoch, 50 (the pastor of Truth and The Spirit Prophetic Church, Lagos state), and nine other members of her church were arrested after allegedly stoneing Agboola Akeem (a traditional worshipper aged 25), to death in a clash at 6.30pm on Tuesday, August 23.



A source from the police confirmed to LIB that officers belonging to the Oko Oba Police Division received an emergency call that indicated that the church at Number 2 Sanni Taiwo Lawal Street in Oko Oba was being set on fire. The officers stormed the church.



Preliminary investigations revealed that traditional worshippers were celebrating the Oro festival, while church members were attending a church service. According to reports, the traditional worshippers invaded the church and demanded that the members cease their services.

Oro Festival is an annual tradition festival that is only celebrated by male descendents who are paternal Natives to the particular locations where it takes place. Females and non-natives must stay indoors during the festival. Oral history says that Oro is not allowed to be seen by women or non-participating persons.

According to police sources, there was a shouting match between traditional worshippers with church members that eventually turned into a fight. One of the traditional worshippers was apparently stoned to death during the incident. The other traditional worshippers became furious and threatened to burn down the church.

The police managed to calm the situation and evacuate the body of the victim and deposit it at the morgue. Police have taken custody of the pastor and nine church members.
