Sheikh Goni Aisami–Gashua, an Islamic scholar from Yobe, was gunned down at Jajimaji on Saturday, August 20, by the head of Karasuwa's local government council.

According to some reports, the cleric was on his way from Gashua to Kano when he was accosted by gunmen.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said some suspects wielding AK-47 rifles have been arrested and are in police custody.

Gashua was one of the most peaceful communities in the state even during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.
