Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, has confirmed that members of Team Nigeria, the historic team that represented Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will be receiving a presidential reception.

The 11-day Commonwealth Games in Birmingham concluded Monday, August 8. Tobi Amusan (World and Commonwealth gold medallist) was Team Nigeria's flag bearer at the closing ceremony.

Team Nigeria had their best ever performance in Birmingham since 1950 when it began taking part in Commonwealth Games. They won 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze medals. This total of 35 medals sees them sitting seventh on the medals tables.

Dare spoke with athletes Monday to praise their efforts at the tournament and stated that plans are being made for an official reception.

He stated, "I was there every minute of your competition." From the very beginning, I was there until I had to go on to other duties. Many Nigerians also followed in your footsteps. We are proud of everything you did for Nigeria and ourselves.

"Mr. President is also proud of you and has authorized that reception is held in honor of your historic achievement at Birmingham 2022.

"We will immediately begin to plan the reception. Once we have tightened up things, we will announce and invite everyone from all bases. You will then have the privilege of meeting Mr. President.

"Nigeria will be grateful to you for your great acts of patriotism, sacrifice, and determination to excel, regardless of whether you wear a medal around your neck."

Australia was the champion of the event with 178 medals. England came in second place with 57 gold and 66 silver, 53 bronze, and 53 bronze medals. Canada was third with a total of 92 medals.

New Zealand, India, and Scotland are in the fourth, fifth, and sixth places, respectively. The top 10 are completed by South Africa, Malaysia, and Wales.
