C&S youths seek end to ASUU strike by atoluwash(m) : 2:00 pm On Aug 02, 2022

Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education has been advised to find a solution to end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

On Monday, the National Youth Fellowship of the Praying Band Cherubim church and the Seraphim church called the minister to end the impasse. This was just after the two-week ultimatum by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). The impasse will be ended on Tuesday by the minister

Afolabi Olowe, youth leader of the fellowship, spoke at a press conference to mark its 20th anniversary at Lagos' church headquarters. He said that the ongoing strike had become a concern as it has kept students away for several months.

He asked the Federal Government for priority on the strike action to ensure that public universities reopen in the month of March.

He stated, "As the youth wing of the church, we won’t turn deaf to recent happenings in the country, especially one that directly affects members of our fellowship, which is the ASUU Strike.

"We recall that academic activities in our public universities were stopped and students were sent home on February 14, 2022, due to the inability of the Federal Government to implement previous agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities. It is now almost six months and all is not well.

"In solidarity with the strike, we have seen the efforts of Ayuba Wabba's Nigeria Labour Congress by marching in the streets for the past week. We hope that this will lead to a significant change in the strike and a positive outcome.

“It is also worth noting that the President, on July 19, issued a two-week ultimatum to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to resolve the impasse. As the ultimatum ends tomorrow (today), we urge the minister to ensure that the outcome yields good fruit so our students can return to school.

“We rise as a voice in this nation to beckon once again on the Federal Government to make the ASUU strike action a priority and make sure that public universities are reopened this month.”

Olaoke also admonished Nigerian youths to be politically active.
