Anambra residents turn sit-at-home to club meeting days by atoluwash(m) : 1:47 pm On Aug 02, 2022

The Monday sit-at-home orders in the South-East have been transformed into a day for town unions, clubs, organizations, and other social gatherings in Anambra State.

In most streets of Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, Obosi, and some parts of Awka, people were seen in various groups and different locations having their meetings.

Before the development, such meetings were only held on Sundays.

Our correspondent noticed that youths who did not belong to any associations were seen jogging along major roads unmolested while the entire road was deserted.

Markets, offices, banks, offices and petrol stations were closed as usual despite the fact that there was very little vehicular movement.

Recent weeks have seen the exercise be free from the intimidation and harassment that was typical of it a few weeks ago.

Our correspondent was able to see that town union meetings were still being held at the Peoples' Club, on the Onitsha/Owerri Road, and the Travellers' Hotel along the busy Onitsha/Asaba/Benin Expressway.

The chairman of Onitsha's social club, Mr. Ikem Ozonachi said that the new development had prompted him to say, "We now have our weekly meetings Mondays since it is a non-work day."

"Previously it was held every Saturday. But we decided that since Mondays are sit-at-home Mondays, we should shift it to Mondays so we can trade or work as needed."

A Nnewi-based businessman Chief Philip Yagazie said that Mondays have been a time when the business activities are lagging. Therefore, instead of staying indoors doing nothing, we decided to move our weekly weekend meetings to Mondays.

Schools, banks, markets, and offices as well as local government secretariats were still closed at the time this report was filed.
