World bicycle day: FRSC highlights health benefits of using bicycles by ayodeji11(m) : 6:08 pm On Jun 04, 2022 |
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stated that bicycle riding is a great way of movement and has immense health benefits and urged Nigerians to embrace the practice, which it said would also help to decongest the roads. Abia State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Paul Ugwu made the appeal in Umuahia at a rally to mark this year's World Bicycle Day. He also stated that cycling helps burn excess fats. He listed some of the benefits of riding a bicycle, including: "reduction in carbon emission, reduction in fuel expenses and improvement on general health." However, the Sector Commander noted some of the challenges that bicycle use in Nigeria presents, such as inadequate road infrastructure, stigma, and unsafe road habits. He appealed for the wife of the Governor to join the Corps in promoting the use of bicycles as a way of moving the state. Dr. Mrs. Nkechi Nkechi Ikpeazu, Abia's Governor's wife, expressed gratitude to FRSC for organizing the rally and promised to help the Corps raise awareness about the many health benefits of riding a bicycle. She encouraged the public to adopt cycling as a mode of movement, especially considering the many health benefits. The Chief Medical Director Professor Onyebuchi addressed the corps marshals as well as other participants to the rally when they stopped at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia. He noted that cycling was a common way to exercise. He stated that people who ride a bicycle regularly are less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, or obesity. CMD also stated that riding a bicycle is a fun, low-impact exercise option for everyone. The Sector Commander thanked MD for their cooperation over the years, particularly in the area of quick response to road accident victims. The rally saw Ikpeazu's spouse and several Government officials ride on bicyle. During the visit, the Sector Commander visited a state radio station to educate the public about the many benefits of cycling. |
