The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and widow of Ambassador Walter Carrington, Dr Arese Carrington, have said opportunities should be created for youths and women to thrive.

They spoke in Lagos at the inaugural Ambassador Walter Carrington Annual Symposium which was titled, ‘Rethinking Governance for Youth and Women’s Participation.’

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Mrs Ajibola Ponnle, said, “The Walter Carrington Foundation has been and continues to play a critical role towards the socio-economic growth and sustainability of society.

“The youth section of the nation’s economy remains a critical factor and must be given the necessary attention with enabling environments and opportunities for them to express themselves and attain their full potentials for the benefit of the society.”

Carrington said, “When those in authority in any part of the world are making decisions that will jeopadise your future, you have to find constructive ways to defend that future because the future depends on the decision we make and the actions we take today. All though the future belongs to all of us a greater part of the future belongs to the youth, you must not discount your future gain, keep pressing forward with those ideals you strongly believe in to make the world a better future.”

The Olu of Warri, Tsola Emiko, Atuwase III also urged the Nigerian youths and women to participate more in the process of governance as it would enhance the economic growth of the nation.

He said, “Women and youths are the remaining two-third that we must fully utilise for us to get there. I dare say if governance gets it right to reach this right equilibrium, society can only be right for it.”

The President of the Carrington Fellowship Network, Mr Olusola Owonikoko, described the late Carrington as a true hero of democracy, saying it was important for every youth to be more relevant in politics.
