Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, better known as Vector, is one of the most respected rappers in Nigeria at the moment. Known for his brilliant punch lines, the artiste however stated that he tries not to get used to being called one of the best rappers in the music industry.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, he said, “I appreciate the views of the people who love my music. I appreciate that they all think I am one of the best in the music industry. It is an honor to follow one’s heart desires and find people agreeing with one as one travels that path. However, I try not to get used to it, as I usually remind myself not to let that get in the way of my spirit and whatever purpose I have to fulfill. I try not to allow my ‘head swelling’ distract myself.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind his last album, T.E.S.L.I.M, the outspoken rapper noted that the idea came during the funeral of his late father. He said, “The casket in front of me had me thinking and it came to me. I have always felt different. I listen to my spirit a lot when it comes to my music. You may say this time, there’s more experience of life in the mix. I have faced one of the ultimate scenarios a human being can experience, which is the passing on of a loved one (my dad) and I am still here. This speaks of growth.”

Sharing his thoughts about the quality of music being released these days, the rapper said, “I don’t think I am in the right position to rate music because I am also an artiste. Do I have opinions in private circles? Yes, I do. But, does it matter enough to make news? I don’t think so.”

The Ogun State-born rapper who comments on societal ills through his music and on social media however stated that he had no plan to run for an elective position. He added, “I did not even plan to be vocal in the first place. I grew up with the mentality that Nigeria could not be good again and that opportunity comes but once.

I have seen realised that is a silly belief. As a kid growing up in the middle of such false arguments, there was no way it was by my doing that I chose to do my best. My parents raised us to be content, so that must have aided my stance, now that I think about it. As for running for an elective post, I don’t have any intention as we speak but I have been told, even in the barracks, that they are waiting for me to run for office. I have always said to myself that I am willing to contribute to whatever must be done for the good of society.”
