See possible replacement for late senator Osinowo by Abimola(m) : 9:32 am On Jun 20, 2020 |
Mr Akinwunmi Ambode may be about to return to political accounts in the state of Lagos
He was considered one of the likely alternatives in the National Assembly to Late Senator Bayo Oshinowo Recent political events in Lagos suggest that Ambode has made peace with the state's Party leaders Silent agitations for the appointment of Late Senator Bayo Oshinowo have begun. After a short disease suspected of COVID-19 at the age of 64, former majority leader Oshinowo in the House of Assembly of Lagos was killed. So, his sudden death created a vacuum in the National Assembly's upper chamber. Although the process for its replacement has not begun, names of possible replacement are already flying as its likely replacement within the ruling All Progressive Congress ( APC) with five people already tipped. They include Dr Tola Kasali, a two-times state commissioner, the immediate past governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, the Predecessor of Senator Oshinowo, Gbenga Ashafa, Jimi Benson, Member of the House of Representatives and Mr Abike Dabiri, current Diaspora Commission Director General of Nigeria. A commentator on public affairs quoted in the report, Segun Adegoke, said that any of the five chieftains of the APC could emerge as a party favourite. Though booted out of the APC last year, in recent times Ambode appears to have made peace with Lagos party leaders. In the 2019 governorship election, Ambode was said to have annoyed the powers that are in the state, hence the decision not to give him a return ticket. The former governor was hounded by anti-corruption agencies shortly after he was booted out, but all that now appears to be in the past. Although Ambode is from Epe, which is under Lagos Central Senatorial District, he may still represent Lagos East in the Senate. The state party leaders are inclined to transfer loyal politicians from one electorate or senatorial district into another, despite their cosmopolitan presence and the apparent distance of the average Lagos voter. A former House of Assembly speaker from Lagos state, Rt. Hon. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji was from Epe but moved to Ikeja federal constituency at some point to contest state elections. Meanwhile, the National Assembly complex has been shut down again after Senator Osinowo 's death due to fears of suspected COVID-19 case. |
