AmakaUche: High cost of agricultural products in some part of the country can be due to a number of reasons:

1. Cost of transportation- in Nigeria particularly, most of the farming activities are carried out in the northern parts and cost of conveying agricultural produce to other parts of the country can be quite expensive. A large percentage of agricultural produce are also imported.

2. Poor storage facilities and perishable nature of some agricultural produce- In Nigeria, there is lack of adequate storage facilities for proper storage of some agricultural produce mostly perishables, alot of produce go bad due to improper storage and handling during the process of transporting them. On getting to the buyer/consumer, prices of the few good ones are sold at a higher cost than usual by the traders to avoid running into losses.

3. Middle men- When agricultural produce leave the farm the prices naturally increase from wholesalers to retailers before they get to the final consumers because these middle men aim at making their individual profit. Buying directly from farmers is a cheaper alternative especially if you are looking to buy in bulk.

4. Scarcity- prices of scarce goods tend to sky rocket unlike when they are in abundance. Pest and disease infestation among a number of factors can be responsible for scarcity.
