Despite Thursday’s demolition of a building belonging to the Saraki family in Ilofa, GRA, Ilorin, aged women still converge on the place.

Ile Arugbo (house for old persons) was demolished after the state government revoked the title of the property.

Our correspondent, who visited the place on Saturday afternoon, saw some old women and young men around the country home of the late Dr Olusola Saraki opposite the property which has been the subject of dispute between the Kwara State Government and the Saraki family.

It was observed that some policemen were stationed to keep watch on the land and maintain the peace in the area.

Our correspondent learnt that supporters of ex-Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, had made it a daily routine to report as early as 7am in the area to receive money, foodstuffs and other gifts from him.

It was learnt that old women in their hundreds had continued to show their support for Saraki, singing his praises.

The man, who supervised the distribution of gifts to the women on Friday identified as Rasaq Aladie, said Saraki had always provided enough for the women whether he was in Ilorin or not.

The women on Thursday moved from the Sarakis residence to the palace of the Emir of Ilorin to protest the demolition of Ile Arugbo.

The women, who were led by the Peoples Democratic party women leader in the state, Alhaja Ramatalai Oganija, condemned the state government’s action.

One of the women, who simply identified herself as Alhaja Sifawu, appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to rescind his decision on the revocation of the land.

She said the late Olusola Saraki had for about 30 years been using the place to distribute gifts to old women, even during the military rule without any hindrance.

She said, “The late Olusola Saraki was our benefactor who took good care of us during his lifetime. His son, Dr Bukola Saraki, is also following in his footsteps.”
