But it's hard to compare the Argentine with the likes of Maradona, Pele and Ronaldo Nazario. The game was different in their days.
Barcelona legend Ronaldinho was asked to comment on Lionel Messi's sixth Ballon d'Or and his admission might shock Blaugrana supporters. According to the Brazilian, the Argentine is the best player of his time but not in the whole history of the game.
"I'm glad for Messi because he's a friend and a symbol of Barcelona," Ronaldinho said on Thursday at the exhibition at the Centenario de Morelos Stadium in Mexico.
"I don't like comparisons because it's hard to identify who is the best in history, there's Diego Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo. I can't say that Messi is the best ever, he is the best in his time."
As a reminder, Messi was handed his sixth Ballon d'Or last Monday, December 2. His closest competitor was Liverpool 's Virgil van Dijk, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane finishing in third and fourth respectively.
