The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal in Kano has sacked the member representing Takai/Sumaila Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdurrahman Sumaila.

Sumaila, a former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

In its ruling, the three-man tribunal led by Justice Onyekan Abdullahi upheld the decision of the Supreme Court on the matter, which disqualified Sumaila on the grounds that he did not participate in the preliminary stages of the election processes.

“Notice is hereby given to INEC to declare the first petitioner as the winner and issue a certificate of return to him.

“Suraj Idris Kanawa is, therefore, the winner of Takai/Sumaila Federal House of Representatives election, which the tribunal has upheld,” the judge concluded.

Counsel for the sacked lawmaker, Dr. Nasir Aliyu, said his client had accepted the ruling, adding that they had no plan to appeal the judgment.

In a related development, the Election Petitions Tribunal in Bauchi has nullified the election of Abdulkadir Sarki, the member representing Katagum Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party.

Ibrahim Baba, the candidate of the APC had challenged the declarations of the Peoples Redemption Party candidate as the winner in the poll.

A three-man panel headed by Justice Bello Tukur in a unanimous judgment on Thursday nullified the election of Sarki on the grounds that the election ought to have been declared inconclusive.

The tribunal further ordered a run-off in the polling units where results were canceled.

Meanwhile, the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Adamawa State will on Saturday (today) deliver judgment on the petition challenging the victory of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

This came just as tribunal affirmed the victories of Senator Elisha Abbo and Senator Binos Yaroe, representing Adamawa Northern and Southern senatorial districts, respectively and subsequently dismissed the petition challenging their declarations for lack of merit.

In the petition challenging Fintiri’s victory, which was filed by the governorship candidate of the Action Peoples Party, Crowther Seth, in suit number EPT/AD/GOV/ 01/2019, the tribunal had initially slated the judgment for Thursday, but it was later shifted to August 31.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt has ordered the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal to hear on merit the matter brought before it by the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, Biokpomaba Awara against Governor Nyesom Wike.

The tribunal had earlier dismissed Awara’s petition citing the AAC candidate’s abandonment of his request.

But in a unanimous ruling on Friday, the five-man Appeal Court panel led by Justice J. O. Bada directed that the matter should be returned to the tribunal.

The court also maintained that the appellant (Awara) did nothing wrong by asking for the regularisation and separation of the suit.
