Somali President, Farmajo, Pardons 91 Prisoners To Mark Independence Day by atoluwash(m) : 11:41 am On Jul 03, 2017 |
Somalia on Saturday celebrated its Independence Day, marking 57 years since it attained self-rule.
As part of activities to celebrate the day, Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed ‘Farmajo’ ordered the release of 91 prisoners. In May this year, President Farmajo set up a 9-member commission to look into the state of prisons. After conducting its work, the commission recommended that the president pardon a number of prisoners held for misdemeanor. The released persons are those that were being held for petty crimes. Most of those pardoned were serving prison terms for debts and mobile phone thefts. The freed prisoners thanked the president for the pardon and promised that they would take advantage of this opportunity to rebuild their future.
