© Den of Geek SpongeBob SquarePants prequel series set for NickelodeonThe underwater exploits of SpongeBob’s summer camp childhood exploits will be the focus of a new Nickelodeon prequel series.
SpongeBob SquarePantshas plenty of projects – a year-long birthday bash, a special featuring the voice cast in live-action form, another movie and even prospective spinoff shows – on his franchise backlog during the porous Pollyannaish pineapple-dweller’s 20thanniversary. However, Nickelodeon has another entry to offer, a prequel series set to focus on a 10-year-old version of the character during a stay at summer sleepaway camp.

"SpongeBob's rendition of Sweet Victory performed on Band Geeks episode in 2001"Tentatively titledKamp Koral, Nickelodeon has officially greenlit the young-Sponge-Bob prequel series for a 13-episode run, reports Deadline.
Unlike the mothership show, the prequel will manifest as a CGI-concocted series, though will remain 2D. According to the description, the prequel will focus on SpongeBob’s stay at “the craziest camp in the kelp forest,” Kamp Koral, where he’ll spend the summer “building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck”

The prequel will manifest under the purview of familiar personnel, withSpongeBob SquarePants'Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller set as co-executive producers. As Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon’s EVP Animation Production and Development, expresses of the prequel project:

“SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koralis a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world.”
TheSpongeBob SquarePantsfranchise, created by Stephen Hillenburg, who just passed away this past November, introduced itself to the world when its first episode aired on July 17, 1999.

The series made an immediate impact on children and the pop culture zeitgeist in general with its unique combination of earnestness and innocence of the eponymous child-like living loofa and an underlying subversive, meme-inspiring intelligence that quite often matched some of the best comedic television out there.

The show’s popularity has yielded a plethora of awards, and even a theatrically released feature in 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movieand its 2015 sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, with a third film, titled The SpongeBob Movie: It’s A Wonderful Sponge, set for next year.

Kamp Koraldoes not have a release date as of yet, but production is reportedly scheduled to commence at Nickelodeon’s animation facilities this month.
